I might be misremembering this, but I think that when Doug Polk battled Sauce, the latter somehow won in the BB while losing on the button. I'm not sure how much of that was due to variance, but it's obviously possible to win in the BB, if your strategy there beats whatever strategy the SB/BTN is playing. e.g. If the SB gives you too many walks, or folds to 3-bets too often, or over-folds to donkbets or check-raise bluffs or whatever.
In a small sample, variance in your results will be a huge factor, but in a long-term game between two equally skilled players, being in position (SB/BTN) gives you a significant edge. And you can't both be profitable, due to rake.
