How to play poker 101. How to play poker 101.

Poker is a very simple game. It's random. All you have to do is to figured out how to fit in all that “randomness”. No a “simple” task. But random with all the implications attached to it, is still simple. Its just random.

Those people that hide behind sun glasses and hoods and scarfs and etc. are totally convince that if they hide, and the other guy can not see their expression, is all they need to do to win a hand and then the poker world series. Or the guy that’s always talking. He is searching for clues, waiting for his sonar system to comeback with the exact location of their next prey. Most of the times, when I see all those people playing poker on tv, I don't envied them. They all look like they are going thru some case of severe constipation that is seriously affecting their performance. They look like they are not having fun at all!

So lets simplified it . All you have to be is an observer. Try to analyzed to the “best of yours abilities”, how the random flow is going , lets say is "flowing".

Go back to the basics. Just play the numbers. And by that I meant look at the cards you have in your hand, what comes out on the flop, turn, and if you are lucky enough to get this far, the river, and then try to fingered out to the “best of yours abilities” what are the chances in front of you that would make you to win the hand.

Sample # 1 (actually is the only one).

Lets say you have pockets Aces, you raise pre flop, the other guy calls.

The flop shows J89.

You raised again pre turn, the guy calls. The turns shows another J. You then raised again pre river (why not?), kind of worried though because you didn't like the J89 that much anyway. The other guy comes over the top
and goes all in.

The turn is showing J89J.

You still have two Aces on your hand, but that’s it. The other guy have at least 3 different ways to beat you. So the big question is what are you going to do?. Are you the kind of person that thinks that nothing beats pocket Aces, or just because you had the privilege to have 2 Aces you have to go down with the ship?. Or are you the kind of person that looks at how many possible combinations the other player has to beat your hand?

But which one is the best decision?

The time to think about the hand is over. I takes split second to figure that out.

If you called the all in with all the odds against you and loose, you’re probably going to think "I knew it". But if you call and win, you probably are going to think that you are a genius. But you are not. Yhea, the other guy could have an 8 or a 9 and that would give him a full house, but if that's the case,
yours is better. But that is only a big IF. He could have JJ or QT, or just another J., and that would be enough for you to loose.

So what to do? Are you going to GAMBLE or are you going to GET OUT of the hand? This is “the” big question.

When I play, I only play to win. Playing to win means that I have constantly in front of me this gigantic flushing neon sign that says “DON'T SCREW UP”. But what's the correct screw up? Gambling or folding? I personally still could not figured it out. My solution? I go all in every hand.

I don't see how this essay belongs in BQ.
I'll lock it up. Another mod can reopen the thread if they think there is a useful debate to be had.
