Reread his post. He never said you need 5 years to make it to NL50.

He was talking about making it big which is a totally different thing than NL50. He also said today it might take as long to make it from NL2 to NL50 as it did to get to highstakes back in the day.

During the boom years (that ended before Black Friday) several players made it from the lowest stakes all the way up in a very short time. In 2008 someone approached me through the training site I was working for. At that point he just had started to play “seriously” at NL25. In early 2009 we sat in the same NL100 and NL200 games. By the end of that year he was taking shots at NL10k.

Stopped playing after finishing college, pretty standard. He’s a teacher now.

if you try and make a lot of money quickly it will be all taken away from you. the odds of that are quite high. you will spend it, try and make more in a riskier manner, people will ask for a handout and not pay you back.

squids post about putting in the time/money to get better is the best reply in this thread. Still no guarantee in anything but if you get better than your opponents there's a good chance you can make it to the top of poker. putting in the time and money to do this may pay off for you.

It's better to get lucky late in a tourney.

So I was in a study group with Linus and Markus/Makeboifin for a bit. The amount of work they both put into the game was outrageous. I would be on the group for a few hours a day but both of them would be doing something related to poker for the majority of every day.

I decided I didn't like poker *that* much, especially given there's no guarantee of much of a future for the online game.

I was in a small study group around 2009-2010. My two partners were WAY more committed than I. My "papers" were a few hours work for me. My partners.... clearly spent VASTLY more time.

Needless to say, I begged out for their sanity after only a few "study sessions".

Exactly this. In my experience, through making connections you'll graduate through study groups until you end up with people who are either more naturally talented or harder working than you. Once there, the goal is to work hard enough to continue basking in their knowledge until you get kicked or the group dies.

Let's start by saying not reading books. All of us were playing at least 100NL at the time and books simply aren't sufficient at that level. Beyond that, I speculate; they obviously both did a ton of solver work (way more than me), but 'street maths' will never cease to be relevant.

If you’re too lazy to do the work, you might pay someone to do the basic stuff for you until the rest of the group figures that out. In the pre-solver days I did a decent amount of range analyzing/construction for others.
