I'd consider myself a beginner level poker player but that doesn't mean I've never played. I'm familiar with limit and no limit, Holdem stud and Omaha, with friends or at the casino and I know enough not to check raise.

I do my best to play only premium hands but that usually leaves me giving away many blinds; a slow bleed.

A low blind, no-limit Holdem game is where I need help. I'm not sure if I'm poor at reading hands (I am) or if I'm poor at when to bet/raise/fold and what amounts. I calculate pot odds only a very little (mostly when deciding to see another card on a flush draw or something). I'm sure there are many reasons I'm not more consistent at turning a profit in NL, so I'm here to get help.

I don't know exactly where to begin on this forum, can anyone help me with that next step please? Thanks
Joe

Post specific hands. If you are only playing level you'll have to type them out which is awkward but it's far better than asking general questions. It's going to be very difficult to tell you what mistakes you'r making until you provide specific examples.
Have you read any poker books? Have you considered any training sites? There's loads of poker training videos available for free online.
Even if you are only playing live there's poker software that can help you to improve such flopazilla or equilab which is available for free; https://www.pokerstrategy.com/poker-...quilab-holdem/

Seems like you identified your first leak. Just based on how often you play hands, your villains pretty much know your range and when you're good on the flop. They can fold on bad flops for them to wait for the times where you likely just have TP to take you for a big loss.

You'll want to open up your game the right way. That doesn't mean playing crap from any position, but to slow start adding hands on the button that you'll raise pf. Without know your range on the button, you would start by moving the best hand you'd fold pf to a raise. Keep going every week or two until you've got a range where people know that while you're mostly playing good cards, there's almost no flop that will completely miss you.

I don't live near a casino and haven't kept track of past hands. Is there software or apps I can use and play for fake money, that will show me mistakes I've made so I can post the hands on here where I made my biggest mistakes (maybe that's the link you sent me, but please tell me if you suggest anything else).

Assuming no raises and late position, the widest range of hands I currently play is roughly Any Pair, any two cards when both are 10 to A, and suited connectors of 8-9 and higher.
How much more should I expand? Or are you suggesting I just play these hands in early position too? Thank you for helping

joe there is so much info here and you know so little in reality. so start reading as much as you can and when you get a little more foundation ask and post some hand questions.
you cant be spoon fed to become a good player.

if you really want to get better you need to read books and spend time thinking about hands so you understand them and dont use past results to guide your future play.

good luck its hard work.

Are there any free websites or apps which I can use for practice and also will be able to point out my bad hands so I can post them here as questions?

Welcome and we are glad you have taken an interest in poker. There is a lot of useful information available to you here and across different media platforms .. a lot of which is free.

1) Playing on 'free' sites/apps is 'OK' for you to learn about game flow and to also practice recognizing poker situations. You shouldn't pay too much attention to your opponents at these tables since players don't really care as much about winning as they do just playing the game .. good or bad.

2) The hands you are playing are considered 'tight', even 'Nitty', and if you play against the same people or play for long periods of time your opponents will pick up on this and try to take advantage of it when the Board doesn't come out in your favor. You may win a bunch of small pots but then lose some huge pots when you actually get to the River.

3) Poker is a game of incomplete information, aggression and 'deception'. It's very common for newer players to over-value 'strong' holdings and also to fold when other players are aggressive since 'they must have it', why would they be betting? When you play a 'limited' range of holdings it's easier for your opponents to deceive you when 'your' cards don't hit the Board.

4) It's also 'natural' for players to try and 'trap' with their really good hands since they figure the other players must not have the same kind of hand. When you do this you may miss out on a lot of 'value' and your stack may be smaller ... or you will lose a big pot when the other player catches up.

Search this site and read ... search for video on UTube, Twitch.tv or other free streams and listen to the content to learn how others think through each hand. Lots of stuff out there ... GL
