Are these 2 bad beats? Are these 2 bad beats?

Hero = AK
V = AQ
I shove pre-flop (4 bet)
Board = T 8 K J 5
Hero loses!

Hero = KJ (bets 3BB)
V = calls (T A)
Flop = T Q K
Hero bets.
V shove.
Hero calls
Board = T Q K 2 9
V wins with straight

Any reads or stats on the villains

What were stacksizes of hero and villain in each hand.
What were hero and villain's positions in each hand.

Please provide this information and we will help.

this obsession to give a name to everything is forever baffling

no

Villain doesn't even win the second one

I believe the first hand qualifies as a bad beat, because you were a substantial favourite when the money went in, and yet despite this fact lost the hand to an unlucky runout of subsequent cards.

It is actually a leak. People want to categorize and dismiss a hand, and say 'it was just a bad beat', rather than look at the quality of their play or decisions. I am not even sure what a bad beat is any more. Is it a suckout where you got your money in good wiuth 70+% equity, and lost? Is it a cooler where play strongly with a nuttish hand, only to lose to a bigger hand? The term has begun to lose precise meaning.

This is extremely true. I really turned the corner when I truly understood and accepted variance. Everyone will get the same luck. I stopped caring about the outcome and started obbsesing over every minor detail of every street in every hand and broke it down to the point where I understood every street and what every option would have provided me.

That’s very good. Next step is to understand that in real world poker not everyone will have the same luck and accept that fact, too.

I'm not sure they have to have a label. Yeah you got it in with the best of it in hand 1, and lost. It happens. Does calling it a bad beat mean you played it correctly? Not necessarily.

Unless you made a mistake in the recall, you won hand 2. Villain doesn't have a straight, you do.

What is a suck out? Just catching up from 'any' behind equity?

What is a bad beat? Catching up from 'way' behind equity? To some, you need AAAKK before you can even experience a true bad beat.

It can be different for every Player. For me, if my AK gets beat for 20bb by AQ I smile and hope it goes better next time. If my AK gets beat for 200bb by AQ I'm looking for the nearest trash can ... (no I'm not) ... but I think you see what I mean here. GL

I wouldn't call it a bad beat unless you have quads or better and lose.

So losing with quads is a bad beat if you got it in with 91% equity but losing with a flush isn’t if you got it in with 98% equity?

I define "bad beat" as making the correct EV play, yet still losing.
Some may call that variance, but the theme is the same.
I don't care for degrees just correct vs incorrect decisions

First hand was just variance. You got it in good and lost. <shrug> on to the next hand.

Second hand was a train wreck. Butchered by both players. Stop playing bingo.
