I've been playing poker professionally a shot for about 2 months now. I've been averaging about 9 BB/hour playing 2/3 NLH for about 250 hours. I feel like I've been pretty successful so far, but I want to start mixing in tournaments as well.

What's the best way to study and to learn about tournament play?
  • Books
  • Articles
  • Threads on 2+2 that I haven't found yet
  • Youtube videos (I don't seem to be learning much from Jeff Boski videos however)
  • Simple adjustments I should make to my game such as bet sizing, opening ranges, etc.

Thanks in advanced!

Books: I found the Harrington series on modern tournament poker (vols. I, II, and III) to be very useful. Good luck!

when you get down to 0-20BB in a tourney your going to have to either go all in or fold. play more aggressive whens there's antes.

Play a lot. read the tournies forum. post hands.

The Harrington on Holden volumes 1 2 and 3 are his original books. The book he wrote on Modern tournament poker is a single book which came out a few years ago.

Tournament are all about the structure. The 'rule' about 20bb can be adjusted based on how fast the levels are moving along and where you are with the money bubble. In the WSOP ME there were players still actually applying pressure with only 6-8bb since they have 2 hour levels.

It's very important to pay attention to effective stacks and know how the Button and Blinds are going to play against your opening bets.

IMO I play the first 'few' levels of a tournament just like I would any cash table. Then once players start to drop out you really need to think about narrowing your range based on position.

Using your position in a tournament is huge by applying pressure on opponents who know they can't rebuy like in a cash setting.

Please stay away from the casino 'dailys' unless you just want to use them for a training tool on the cheap. The structures move too quickly to really 'play' tournament poker once you get past Level 5-8. Typically if you don't double up every Level then you will be out ... and that's a lot to ask when you barely get through an orbit per Level in some structures.

The higher BI weekly/monthly tournaments are nice .. more chips and more play due to longer Levels (30-40min or more). There you have time to adjust to being card dead for a longer period of time and can better pick your spots against opponents playing too many hands. GL
