My plan is to save up $25,000 to eventually be able to play 2/5 NL PLO live.
I will start at 1/2 NL and 1/2 PLO live but move up when I know im beating it.
I've given myself 5 years to save up $25,000. Now I have 5 years of studying to do. Will studying for 5 years get you better at poker?

Just like a uni/college student goes to college/uni for 4 years to study i will study poker for 5 years without actually playing. i might watch some online poker.

You would definately become better by studying, but I think you would learn a lot more by playing poker aswell, even if it was for just 1 hour a day.
Knowledge is good, but for it to have any value you need to know how and when to apply it, and this takes practice, not studying.
You might get a lot of knowledge, but it's possible you would just overload your brain with information. So when you after 5 intensive years sit down at the table for the first time, your head might actually explode. I'm not even joking, like literally exploding. Tread very careful my friend.

Would you trust a brain surgeon that had only learned his trade from text books? I'm sure once you open someone's skull your textbook perspective changes a lot. Same with poker. Don't underestimate the influence emotions and pressure. You can't learn that from a book.

There's a world of difference between studying poker and playing poker. You need to play to be able to take what you read and turn it into habits you keep. Play far more than you study.

I have a better plan for you.

Study for a month or so and set a buy-in for 1/2 aside. After a month, go play and see how to do. Repeat this process.

You should be able to make $25K in 5 years easily if you turn yourself into a winning player. Then, 5 years from now, you will have a $25K bankroll of OPM (Other People's Money) and 5 years of playing of experience to go with it.

@atw To be honest with you most winning poker players dont start off with I am going to make X amount of money playing poker.
They play because they LOVE the game. They play because they want to see how competitive they can be.
Most begining players should aspire to be break even players the 1st year or two.

If you can afford to save $400 a month, why not save $350 a month and put $50 a month online to learn through playing at the micros as well?

As has been said, you're going to learn a lot by playing. Book knowledge only gets you so far, but it does help build the bridges from plateau to plateau. You have to do both.

Save a bit and study, play. Take a short break to save a bit, study then play again. Repeat ad nausium.
