Greetings

Next week ill be going to the casino for my first 3/6 limit hold-em game. Some of these questions im sure seem basic for experienced players but any advice would be helpful so i don't look completely lost when i show up.

1)How do I join a table? From what i understand there is signup/waiting list in the poker room.

2)For betting on the first 2 rounds of 3/6 am i only allowed to raise in increments of $3? can i go from $3 to $9 on my first raise or do i have to have someone ahead of me raise to $6 first? same goes for the $6 turn/river

3)Can i get my cheques at the cashier ahead of time or must i get them at the table?

4)If i want to take a break/bathroom can i leave all my cheques at the table or do i need to bring them with me?

5)When i want to check do i have to announce it or is there some kind of non verbal indicator i can use?

Any other advice you may have that you can think of i would greatly appreciate it . Thanks again.

Welcome to the forums!

1. Usually there's a desk at the entrance to the poker room where you can talk to somebody and they take you to an open seat or put your name on the list.

2. A raise is exactly one additional bet per player and turn (until the cap is reached).

3. Depends on the card room. Most of the time there's a cage / cashier for that. For limit games where you use a lot of small chips that's the preferred way over asking the dealer at the table. If the card room has chip runners you can hand them money.

4. You can leave them there. For how long exactly depends on the card room.

5. You can tap/knock the table for a non-verbal check. Don't tap the table if action is on you and you don't want to check. That tap is binding.

OP, one question you didn’t ask is how much you can, or should, buy in for.

You can buy in for as much as you want, but at 3/6, if you buy in for more than $200, people will think you’re weird and clueless. The minimum buy-in where I play is $30 for 3/6 (five big bets).

I usually start with a rack of $1 chips ($100). You can buy more chips anytime you are not in a hand, so if I get down to about $40, I usually buy another rack.

Would $100 be sufficient to start with or would you suggest $200?

Your buyin really doesn't matter at limit as long as you can cover any bet. With a 4-bet cap that would be $72 here. $100 is a natural buy-in for this stake. I don't see much point in buying in $200 unless it's a super aggro game with a lot of streets being capped and you don't want to worry about frequent re-buys.

Just to add, most limit games have a cap of a bet plus three raises on any betting round. This rarely comes into play unless it’s a super aggressive table, but be aware. That means preflop and flop are capped at $12, turn and river at $24. The exception typically is if a betting round starts heads up. The round is then typically uncapped. The round must start heads up to be uncapped. For example, if a round that starts with three players, player A bets 6, player B folds, player C raises to 12, and A raises to 18, then C can still raise to 24. If he does A must call or fold. Even though it’s heads up now, the round is capped because it does not start that way.

For LHE, I usually buy in for 25 big bets, so $150 for 3/6

I used to play a lot of 3/6. I usually buyin for $200. It just felt right as it was about the amount needed if I lost 3 max pots in a short period of time. At a minimum, $72 at the beginning of every hand as that is the max possible to bet in any single one hand.

Almost everyone else is buying in for table minimum $40. up to $100.

I started out playing 2/4 limit and typically bought in for a rack of whites ($100). When playing 3/6 I typically scaled my buy in accordingly and did $150. In reality though as long as you have at least $72 in front of you (and truth be told max pots are exceedingly rare at limit tables) it really doesn’t matter much what your buy in is.

Btw I’ve also done a $180 buy in just out of convenience. That’s a rack with four white and one red stacks; it gives you some reds to use for the $6 bets and/or raises. It’s easy on the cashier as well.

Thanks for all the replies they have been very helpful.

Another question I have is say its a 3/6 limit game and i am directly to the left of the button on the flop. Am i forced to only bet $3 or can i immediately raise to $6 to start the action? Thanks again.

Any time you open the action, you can only bet the amount for that street, so you can only bet $3 on the flop in this position. On the turn or river, you would be able to bet $6. Pre flop, you can immediately raise to $6 because the big blind counts as an initial $3 bet.
