I'm trying to work on my pre flop calling range by looking at hands that have equity against villain ranges. My question is how much equity do I need to be making a call. At first I was thinking I should just calculate pot odds but that is producing results that I think are too low and don't consider others left to act. Is there a general or standard percentage I should be looking for equity wise?

Unless you are all-in preflop, looking at equity relative to pot odds is a very incomplete analysis. You will win more than the pot when you hit, and can control your losses somewhat when. You should be considering implied odds and post flop playability in addition to pure equity.
