Hello,

I am wondering about staking!

What personal information do stakers need to know?
Do you need to be a proven winning player to get staked?
Any tips when applying for staking?
Whats a good staking deal?

p.s. I know there is tonnes of info out there but please if someone could enlighten me on the above questions.

Thank you

1. Win rate/experience/volume/goals
2. Vast majority of time, yes. The only situation where it might not be required is in a CFP deal.
3. Make sure you have the information to (1.) and any references
4. Depends on winrate/volume and if coaching is involved -- anywhere from 30/70 to 70/30 ish

The bigger the investment, the more information is exchanged, typically.

No, but it helps. You can probably get a small stake here and there on being nice to others without much skill. However, in order to land a long term deal it would be good to have online graphs of decent samples(200k hands cash or 1k tourneys is my ballpark guess at decent sample numbers). Or if you play live, it would have to be someone that either really likes you, or someone that knows you're proficient.

Be nice. Assume nothing. Even if someone has staked you in the past, they might decline for whatever reason, which is really none of the player's business. Oh and be nice. Try to act in a professional manner as you would in any business effort. Never guarantee victory. Never place blame on "bad players." Never tilt, this one's tough. Oh and be nice, not just to the investor, but be someone that your opponents like to play cards with.

You can sell pieces at even money: If you have $200 and someone else has $200, you might sell 50% of the final tally. This could be set as a tourney, or a certain number of hours in an approved cashgame, or a combination of the two.

You can sell at a markup: If you have $200 and someone else has $200, you might sell 45% of the final tally, but you need to be pretty good to do this.

You can get freerolled: An investor may put up 100% of the starting money, and you must agree on what % the player gets. I've played freerolls that paid 50% of the final tally. I've played freerolls that paid 20% of the final tally. I've played freerolls that paid out 50% of (profits). I've played freerolls that paid out 75% of (profits).

Oh and did I say be nice?

good luck.

It is useful mostly when one is making shots higher. Good luck in finding a staker for that. Moving to play the live games could be a reason for selling action/getting staked (cash and tourneys). Good luck in finding someone to support you there (you could try the local Mafia guy but you better win).

A non-Western player might benefit from getting a small or so stake to grind some game somewhere that he can prove he can beat; then it is up to the investor if he wants to take the risk (with many players) and possibly build a relationship for long run also.

Moving up and down with the roll, when moving up and down is possible, cover the same thing. The so-called infinite roll. If you want to make a jump, you can consider staking yourself.

No. But this is like asking if you have to be a competent plumber to get a job as a plumber. You would either have to fake or con someone, or you would need to find someone extremely generous.

Whatever one that meets your goals. Mine is bankroll issues, so I have a good deal. I can't lose. If I lose, it's covered, if I win, I get half of it. Obviously I didn't get this good a deal by conning or faking someone, since I get covered for tens of thousands of dollars.

Like maybe read the staking thread that's listed only 10-12 threads below this one!

My impression is that you think there's a 'staking marketplace' out there when you use terms like 'applying'. The more specific the information (and track record) the better of course.

Each deal is different since the variables of the Player and the expectations of the backing will be different. You may need different terms between different backers even for the same stake game. Obviously never double book.

Make sure that if you know the staker that both of you understand the terms to the fullest in an effort to limit the amount of angst if you lose the stake. GL
