Hi.

In the video I've linked below at 14 minutes in, the poker
coach calculates his pot odds by comparing the pot + call
amount vs call amount.

In the ratio method section of the article I've linked below, the author
calculates the pot odds by comparing the pot vs call amount.

Pot odds are the ratio ( Pot After Opponent Bets) to (Amount You Have to Call). Basically, reward to risk.

For your second example, the site has:

• Our opponent has bet $20 into an $80 pot making it $100.
• This means we have to call $20 to stand a chance of winning $100.
• This makes our odds $100:$20 which works out to equal 5:1 pot odds.

I didn’t check the video but I doubt very much he is not using the same approach. The reason you might think otherwise is how Pot is defined. It could be before villain bets or after, so if the former, the bet amount has to be added to Pot get the reward or win amount.

I've looked over the video again in slow motion and the pot is defined after villain bets.

Are you saying he is defining pot odds as follows;

Pot = pot after V bets

Call = amount H has to call

Pot Odds = (Pot + Call)/Call

If so, that is not correct if he is using pot odds in the conventional way by comparing them to card odds.

However, I still doubt that he is doing that, at least intentionally.

Yes ,that's how I'm understanding how he's defining the pot odds.

I took a quick look and I think he says there is a bet of 4.73 into a pot of 9.81 with pot odds of about 3 to 1 and that is the right number.

(9.81 + 4.73)/4.73 = 3.1

If the 9.81 includes the 4.73, then you might want to contact the author to see what's up.
