Hi guys,

Not a new player, not a successful player. Just probably your run of the mill TAGfish. Won a few scores but ultimately end up busto due to bad BR management/Tilt.

However I've not played for probably about 3 years. Looking to get back in to it shortly, been studying a bit more about the game, not played in so long so not sure if much has changed.

I'm wondering how you guys best calculate your equity/pot odds during a hand, I found before more often than not I can't calculate it in the time you have to call online (Maths is not my strong point)?

There are numbers you can memorize like a pot size bet gives you 2:1 odds which means you have to be good 1/3 of the time if you have a pot sized river bet.

But in general, if people ask me what to do if they are bad at math, I tell them to either learn to get better at it or don't use a math based approach to play the game.

Math not being my strong suit I combine some basic math with memorization.

a) Pott Odds fairly simple. Estimation on how many times by bet fits into current pot in terms of x:y. (i.e. $125 pot, $25 call = 5:1)

b) Hand Odds: I memorize the x:1 ratio tables. (i.e. Flus Draw at 4.22:1). Playing online poker, I have that chart always next to the keyboard.

This combination works well within the time availble in online-poker.

Not perfect and not very precise, but good enough for starters...

Most sites give you one-click tabs for 1/2 and full pot bets/raises. So use those to help you figure your odds. As with any other situation, the more you do it the more it will become automatic. GL

online poker is only a maths game imo. It's not like you are presented with enough tells for it to be otherwise
