theres a tourny i play. i can either buy in for a higher amount or a lower amount. theres a pricepool for the lower amount lets say $50 buyin for lower amount and 20 players. $1000 pricepool. and a buyin for the higher amount lets say $100 so potentially $2000 if all 20 players buy in for $100. the thing is maybe only 12 players buy in for $100. so theres a separate price pool for the players at the lower amount 20 x 50 = 1000 and for the 12 players who buyin at the higher amount theres a pricepool for them 12 x 50 = $600. so if you finish first in the higher buyin pricepool you could win $300 and if you finish in final three you win some of the lower pricepool plus some of the higher pricepool.

im playing for practice and wanting to get better. am i better investing the $50 into another game or book, or into this game and trying to win the lot?

you start with the same chips whether you buyin for $50 or $100.

Playing for practice, buy in the smaller amount.

Why raise the stakes when you are the novice?

do both study and get experience. sounds like you need lots of study to learn all of the concepts of poker. good luck it takes time.

Where is this tournament? I've never heard of a mixed pool and/or winnings based on what you buy-in for.

Sounds like you are on a pretty tight poker budget ... and you are thinking about it which puts you ahead of a lot of Players who just dive right into playing as much as they can without regard to bankroll or strategy.

Even if you win the tournament, the book will probably last you longer as a reference than the money will for future buy-ins. On the flip side, there are lots of resources online that you can learn from for free. You can also go to your local library to see if the book you want is in their system .. you'd be surprised. Another option is to go to the bookstore and read one chapter a day in the store while enjoying some nice coffee. If you find the book of 'serious' value to you then go ahead and make the purchase. I've found in my collection of books that there's really only 30-40% (if that) new content and the rest is just basic poker that you should already know. GL
