I see a lot of different programs out there to let you look at hand histories, and I know I can post some here for analysis from time to time, but I want to be able to review lots of hands and have some kind of analysis of what I did wrong or could have done better.

I play probably 50% $1.20 SnGs and 50% cash FR $.05/$.10 - $.10/$.25, so I'm looking for a way to analyze hands for both SnG and Cash.

Something that lets me step through the hand and tells me what a recommended action would have been, versus what I did, etc.

Will SnG Wiz do that? Or is there something better?

Get some pokerbuddies, Join a studygroup. Talk hands with them. Watch videos, Read books. Spend alot of time on 2p2.

There is endless possibilities of improving past Reviewing hands.

first thing first if you have the BR to play the 2+25 sng you'll save yourself some money by winning more and paying less rake. if you play 10nl and 25 nl you should have more than enough to jump in the $2 sng.
Do you have Hold'em manager or poker tracker? these would surely be a good start. make sure your hand history is saved on your hrd drive and you'll do just fine. You can also find a free tracker on the software part of the forum. it's called FPDB (Free Poker Data Base). didn't read the whole thread but it looks good enough.

I was looking for those on Stars, but didn't see them. Looked like it jumped from $1.20 to $3.40, but I will look again.

I downloaded the trial version of HEM, but didn't really see a way to analyze past hands, other than just reviewing which ones won and lost. I will check out FPDB as well.

well if you got some dough to spare get a database review with mpethy for your cash he knows what he's doing!!!!! and he's use to give one free hour of database analysis. hopefully he still does. have a look in the coaching sesion. you'll find his thread there.
isac also nailed it take part in groups and get poker buddies.
in the microstakes full rign forum you can also find few post about how to use your tracker to find some basic leaks.

when reviewing hand histories go back in your data base bring up a hand hide the known cards and try to put villain on a range. it doesn't even have to be a hand you played. when the hand is over and you have constructed play by play ranges for each villain show the cards and see how they match up with what you think. (don't do this if you know the results of the hand it won't do you any good)

if you come across a hand and you have no idea what the villains range could be post it and let others look at it and come up with a range. Hopefully they can explain why they choose the range they do, rather than just past a wall of stove txt and say here you go.


Another common thing to do is review your big winners and big losers again hide the villains cards if you can and just go through the hand and see if you can see something you did wrong. Pick apart your game don't be afraid to post hands you might have screwed up on badly, and take some criticism this is how we learn and improve.

Popopop is excellent, IMO. Using it is very intuitive but setup makes you think it was done by drunk men laying down snakes so I wrote a little tutorial on getting it going:

Basically you load it up with your HH and can step through hands and each action in those hands and enter commentary. You can then save that file, share it with friends, they can comment on your comments, etc.

Or you can just send the HH to a friend, they comment and send it back.

Apparently they were recently purchased so perhaps, god willing, the software will see some setup interface changes in the near future.

What I don't like about popopop (but isn't really their fault) is that there's no HUD data. It's not their fault because HUD stats aren't exported to the HH's. I have yet to find a good solution to this problem. So far the non-good solutions I've found are:

• Keep a voice recorder or audio program (Cool Edit Pro, Sound Studio, whatever) running during play, or triggerable during play, so that I can make notes on why I took a given action ("BTN calls big preflop but then folds 80% of flop so I'm going to raise up 72o here...").
• Have your db software going at the same time as popopop so you can step through the hands in popopop and when you come to a relevant hand, open that hand in your manager and now you've got the HUD data.*

* PT3 can do this -- find the relevant session and to the bottom right of where all the hands are listed there's a "play" > button. Click that.

I agree with quux that popopop should be your primary tool. I will do HH reviews with people using it via skype a lot. I send or receive the HH, load it in popopop and we step through it, talking about the interesting spots as they come up. For specific hands, I'll bust out poker stove, sng wiz, or holdemresources.net if the hand warrants it. I tend not to use HUD stats much when doing HH reviews, because you should have a better read anyway during a HH review. I definitely like to look at every player's moves in a HH review, not just my own, though some people find this a little tedious. This helps you practice synthesizing information on reads. If it's a player you see often, don't forget to go update your notes on them/

I have the universal hand replayer,...but am having a few errors. Is there a way to export a hand as a video file? I am creating a powerpoint and looking to insert hands from the Universal Replayer into it. Anyone have an idea of how to do this?
