Been playing for 1.5 years...

I have been playing since maybe... February of 2012. So the question I am asking is, where should I be along the lines of knowledge and experience? Which concepts should I have grasped already? Which concepts should I be looking to grasp? Which concepts are essential for 1 year long players?

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Been playing for 1.5 years...

This is a rather strange question. You have what you know now and what you need to learn to progress, whether it be improve your winrate at your current level or move up. How long you have been playing is irrelevant to either of these. If you have been playing for a year and now beat 100NL for 5bb/100 the answer will be extremely different to if you have been playing for a year and are a breakeven player at 2NL.

I just want to know is what I should know after playing for 1.5x years and what most people should know, it's not strange at all. It's a question of consensus.

I play chess. What should my rating be after 1.5 years of playing?

Re: Been playing for 1.5 years...

Both "know now and what I need to learn to progress" are relevant to what I was asking. I am asking what I "should know after playing playing 1.5 years" I want to know what most players will tell me. I have had a great increa in learning curve, but now my learning curve is 0. I just like to keep learning and trying to become a better player rather than playing and only posting hands with a yes/good played/bad played/nice line/should have lead out trips/check raise turn nut flush.

Sorry for sounding like an ass, but you have to know where I'm coming from.

That's quite cocky isn't it? This is a forum subtopic for beginners, isn't it? Question of consensus. If you understand that.

Re: Been playing for 1.5 years...

It illustrates the point though - what do you hope to gain by a group of people getting together and deciding what they think you currently know and should know? I'm being harsh because the question was quite lazy - what do you currently know? What do you do to work on your game? How often do you play? How often do you work off the tables? What level do you currently play at? None of these are addressed, instead just a generic "I have been playing for 1.5 years, tell me what I should know". Ask a lazy question get a lazy answer - being a beginner is no excuse for laziness, if anything you should be working harder.

It was actually a somewhat clever way of proving a point.

You gave very little parameters for us to work on.

You'll get better answers if you first say where you are at (such as game type played, what limit, key stats, where YOU think you are at on the 'good at poker' scale).... Then we'll have some perspective. All that really matters is that you improve on where you are now.....not some arbitrary line in the sand

Post stats and maybe some people can tell you what you don't know.

This may be a beginners forum but it doesn't condone silly questions, how is anyone going to give you an answer when you haven't provided a benchmark?

Re: Been playing for 1.5 years...

why have you set goals for yourself that you're not meeting? what are they, and why have you not met them?

you're not competing against anybody. Admittedly, talent comes into it. More talented players progress faster because they are more receptive to learning. If you're not talented you can still go far- you just have to put more work into it.

You should be where you currently are. If you wanted to be better at this point, then you would be.

You should know exactly what you put in the time to learn.

You should definitely know ;

Bankroll managment,
Positional play
Opening ranges,
How to use 2+2 to get the most out of your learning experience.

I have been playing for almost 6 years but as I only really started talking it serious at the tale end of last year what I know and what a serious player of the same time will be vastly different.

Re: Been playing for 1.5 years...

After I played for a year and a half I thought I had this game well in hand! Several years later I can not believe how bad I sucked back then. Even though I still suck I have improved, but not due to simple time passing. How long you have been playing is not a good benchmark without much more data included!

^^^ AGREE!

I'm in my 4th year now, and I thought I was gonna turn pro after 1.5 years... I'm still posting in the beginners forum for a reason!

Though I sure don't have 300k hands under my belt... maybe 125k career hands...

Just out of interest what were the main aspects you thought you were good at but were in fact poor at. I have a tendency to go on a heater and think I'm the king of poker, just wondered what concepts are easy to think you're better at than you actually are.

I hope that made sense.

Re: Been playing for 1.5 years...

Simple answer is you can play for 10 years and not know as much as someone who has been playing for 6 months, All depends on how much time you put in away from the tables ,300k hands for a'lot of people is only a few months play as'well.

Re: Been playing for 1.5 years...

I've been playing for 4 years now, and I know enough to know that there are levels of thought that I have not even breached yet.

There is no answer to your question OP. The truth is that it's individual. Maybe at a year and a half you're where I was at 3 years. It depends on natural aptitude, effort, and amount of time you put in. That's different for everyone.

A couple ( actually a few) things like thinking suited or unsuited Broadways were very strong openers all the time. Staying in EP with A little suited or os against raisers. Other silly things too numerous!!!! Not really realizing the strengths and weaknesses of position or not even considering my position most of the time. Bluffing way too much, and thinking others were bluffing me. Dwelling on small sample positive results, not considering I was often just luckboxing! Most importantly not realizing that my level of competition was really awfull. I really couldn't play with folks who were good (as I found out)!

Re: Been playing for 1.5 years...

I can think of a couple o things.

Ranging- often doesn't even exist.
Bet sizing- we don't even think about it.
Position- few really understand what this means
planning- stack awareness and thinking ahead are uncommon.
