Here are a collection of ways I have screwed up over the years.

(And still do sometimes when the action is on me, SMH.)

More than sometimes.

These are not complete, and are intended to be guidelines and not unbreakable rules, and most of them are not original.

But having disregarded the wisdom and advice of others, I grimly appreciate why ignoring good advice is often a stupid decision.

More than once.

Way more than once.

More experienced players and better players are invited to add to the list or object to any of the listed maxims.

***

Always raise premiums, all positions.

Big hand, make it a big pot.

Don’t call a raise with KQ or AJ.

Bet your set.

Respect 2-4 bb openers UTG.

Short shoves pre <25bb can be 66-TT. Or any two Broadways. Or any two suited connectors.

Be the guy with the A.

Look for reasons to raise or shove.

Beware the min-raise.

Beware really old Asian guys.

If out of position, minimize action.

One pair is usually not worth 3 streets of value.

They are not playing back at you.

Do not go broke in a limped pot.

Don’t go broke with a Q in your hand.

They are mostly not bluffing on the river.

***

I lose bigger money on hands when I violate two or three of these maxims. In the same hand.

YMMV.

the problem with poker, and the reason why it poses a unique learning challenge, is the fact that ALL of such platitutes are simply wrong. This is very confusing, since most people are used to learning through deductive reasoning, which usually involves forming some very broad-range sentences and applying them to particular situations (as in, the opposite of what Sherlock Holmes does, which is inductive reasoning ).

In poker, this cannot be done, the only universally true statements that can be formed are about methodology rather than being guidlines for how to perform in specific scenarios. (there is ofc GTO, but true sentences in mathematical theories are very far from what most people would consider "maxims")

As rules of thumbs for beginners, most of these are good. Of course there are no absolutes in poker. Of course we can think of exceptions and edge cases where following these guidelines would be terribly wrong and super exploitable.

I would add

'Consistent is predictable. Predictable is exploitable'
'There are no absolutes in poker'
'Post flop, AA is usually just one pair'

Anyway a really good advice is to always ask yourself why you're doing something.
It might seem obvious but especially online autopilot mode kicks in and you don't realize it.

I wrote a blog on this subject many years ago: 15 Poker maxims for beginners. It seems a little quaint in retrospect.

1. The Baluga Theorem: "Re-evaluate the strength of one pair hands if you get raised on the turn".

2. "River donks and river raises are the nuts."

3. Zeebo Theorem: "No one folds a full house, regardless of bet size".

4. "If you can't spot the sucker in the first twenty minutes, then you're the sucker".

5. "Tight is right".

6. "Don't go broke in a limped pot".

7. "Don't value-own yourself!"

8. "In a multiway pot, someone always has a jack".

9. "No set, no bet" / "Spike or hike".

10. "Pump it or dump it".

11. "Don't go broke with one pair".

12. "Most of money you'll win at poker table comes not from the brilliance of your own play, but from the ineptitude of your opponents." (Lou Krieger)

13. "Don't chase flushes and straights on paired boards."

14. "Focus on making good decisions, and the money will look after itself".

15. "Poker takes a day to learn and a lifetime to master".

I play mostly live limit now and the JT maxim is 100%. Even if it is capped going to SB PF, he-she-w/e is most definitely calling with JT. Not me of course.....I'll only call three bets PF.....

Magically magnetic hand for every limit game I know.

By the way JT not only has all the possibilities to make open ended straight draws but also when JT hits a straight it is always the nuts straight. It's such a huge difference compared to T9.

Knew that was coming. One card straights not counting obviously. It has to be explicitly JT, else T3o would do here.

If you are spending time looking for one sentence solutions to poker you are doing it wrong.
