Is it worth it to study when you can't play? (longish) Is it worth it to study when you can't play? (longish)

I'm not a beginner, but I am a losing player, so I figured this would be a fair place to start.

Summary (tl; dr crowd - not really necessary to read, felt it might be useful to provide a background):

I'm 38. Been playing poker on and off for 13 years. Started in home games, As my skill increased (and the income from my job at the time), tried my hand online. Lost thousands playing 50-100nl, had a few nice scores playing tournaments both online and live. Realizing I had a looong way to go before I would be worthy of an online 100nl table, I tried my hand grinding NL 25 2 years ago, and considered it a small success that I only lost $450, lol. Put the game on hold as I was unemployed, clearly wasn't skilled enough to risk ANY money, and now I'm back in school.

Now (more relevant): I've always had a dream of not necessarily being a world champ, but supplementing my income with poker. Figured if I could get to a point where I was making $500-1000 a month, good for me, there is my rent. I'm in college at ME with a 4.0 my first semester, and will be finishing my Assoc degree in the fall of 2013. No, I will not be leaving to pursue a poker career.

As is the case with most college students, I am broke. Couple that with the collapse of 'Stars, and I have no place to even play $2NL during school to hone my game. I'll be visiting Foxwoods at least once this summer, but trips there will not be a regular thing either; next semester I'll be taking 14-17 credits as well.

The question(s): I have over 25 books, some of which I have read dozens of times each. ToP, both Harrington trilogies, Theory & Practice, Pro NLHE, SS2, and others. When I'm not playing, I don't study; I get burned out with the books and discouraged because I can't play. But I'm tired of wasting my leisure time (what little I have) playing video games when I certainly need to work on my game.

Is it worth it to have these virtually memorized? Are there others I should be looking into? I love YouTube; are there worthwhile vids there? What other avenues of study should I be taking with basically a zero budget? Or should I just keep shelving all of it until I have time and money again?

Any advice is welcome if you're still here, thanks!

Deuces Cracked, Card Runners, Blue Fire Poker, Drag The Bar, The Poker Bank (free), etc

Take a look at: http://www.parttimepoker.com/poker-c...aining-reviews for reviews of these sites.

Imho, some of the books you have mentioned are either aimed at live poker, or too dated. Pro NLHE vol 1 is a cracking book, but a good deal of the examples are utterly useless.

Try The Poker Blueprint... Best book I have ever read.

And the above training sites I think would serve you well. I too find myself getting distracted when i read books, so I find it better to sit infront of my screen and watch the action unfold.

Deuces Cracked btw is my top tip.

That's a huge jump in bankroll size/skill for just a year of play. What stakes did you start at?

200-400NL From 50? **** man, please no. Noooooo.

Dude take it from me, there is one thing I can teach you for free. Never, ever, ever x 11 billion, step beyond your bankroll. I jumped into higher levels because I had money at the time. I wish I had started at $2NL and stayed there until I was a winning player. Could have paid off half my college loans with what I've lost. Besides, you can make substantial money at 50NL.

Second - you never can read too much IF the book is worth reading. There is always a ton to learn outside of the game. You have to continually evolve, especially now. I believe poker will always be there in some form. I believe it may see a 2003-5 heyday again. But I would imagine it's very tough right now outside of drunken donks in AC.

Cool, another vote for it. Alright, other than GutShotDan's excellent suggestions, anyone else have any good recommendations? Or advice in general?

+1 for DeucesCracked.

A one month membership is what, about $30.

You can download a lot of vids in 1 month and watch them at your leisure (no DRM on DC vids).

Heck, you can download a lot of vids during the one week free trial.

Good Luck.

Are you bragging? I don't understand what does this has to do with op's question.

You should be ashamed of yourself. See, this is why I don't miss being 16, or 18, or whatever overly wisdom and maturity-challenged age you're at (if you're older than that man I feel bad for you). For ****'s sake, I even tried to give you advice, and you want to spout off because you've had some success at 50NL? Wow. No, by all means, take your gigantic ego to 400NL. Please.

I've seen a thousand of you come and go, random_kid_hot****_324543534. Get the **** out of my thread.

As for the rest of you, thanks. I'll be back to read the rest later.

Don't do this. It's terrible when one person does it; we don't need more.

Also, Ih8bullets:

It's not a joke, and don't laugh it off, because I mean it seriously. Stop.

There is absolutely no way you are a winning player bullets unless you are leveling the **** out of the forum, in which case, dont do it in BQ. It is nowhere near the appropriate place.
