I'd say there are three types of resources.

First you have passive types of learning - basically watching other people's content. This is great if you're just starting out and don't know where to start, don't have a tonne of time to dedicate to studying, or if you're simply looking for other ideas and perspectives. They also have a pretty low entry cost depending on the product you go for. I personally like RunItOnce - there's loads of different coaches so you won't have trouble finding someone you enjoy watching and something suitable for your level. It's $25/ month. You also have comprehensive courses, of which there are many. My favourite has been Pads' course (also found on RIO), although it's probably not for beginners. This is more expensive (I believe it's $1k now) and while it's well worth it, I wouldn't start out with that just because there's cheaper resources to exhaust before going for this.

Secondly you have study materials/ software. Imo this is where you will make the biggest gains, but it also requires a lot more input from you. You'll have to learn how to use the tools and then put the hours in studying. You won't really get given answers here, more go exploring and find the answers yourself. Here I'd recommend Holdem Resources Calculator - this is pretty much a must for tournament/ SNG players. You'll be able to study all preflop spots, PKO, ICM and chipEV, learning the theory side of things and also making adjustments based on different opponents. It's also extremely underpriced at like 10$ a month. After that, GTO Wizard is amazing. It has all post flop solutions to study and train against the computer. It's a relatively high price point though.

Third thing is coaching. This can really fast-track your learning and save you countless hours of studying yourself. Again, this will be a high price point so you probably want to exhaust your other options before going for this. It's an investment but it should easily pay for itself.

Hello SteelBreeze,

What are some of the best free resources? Will reading top 10 poker books make me a good enough player to win micro stakes make 8 an hour?

You can't really make those kind of assurances in poker - if I read this I will make x - it just doesn't work like that. Whatever you do do will be relative to your competition. I don't have much experience with books but from what I understand many are quite outdated.

To work out your hourly you could do:

Average Buy In * ROI = $ per game.
Then you see how many games you play a day, and your average session length to get your hourly.

There is tons of poker content on YouTube where you can watch, listen and (hopefully) learn some of the thought processes that go into a poker hand. Not everything you see will apply to your specific game .. micro online .. but the flow of the hand and considerations are all there FOR FREE. Bart Hansen (Crush Live Poker) and Jonathon Little (Poker Coaching) are big time on YT to entice you to look at their site.

There are a ton of threads here as well.

I would stick to the 'free' until you get through the 'honeymoon' stage with poker, so to speak. As indicated above, the poker process is different for everyone. There are literally geniuses who are the biggest fish at poker .. and then you have characters like 'Wesley' who has just taken the game by storm in a very short period of time.

These are all live applications so, again, make sure that the resources you are looking at apply closest to what you're trying to accomplish. GL
