What does "solid" mean to you? What does "solid" mean to you?

"Play tight, solid and aggressive." (from the Billjyjex 6-Max book, and elsewhere)

The tight and aggressive parts of that mantra are pretty straightforward, but what does solid mean to you?

Don't make stupid mistakes, sure, but beyond that, what exactly does it mean to you?

To me, it means know your own A game, and play it with as little deviation as possible until you decide to end the session.

it's the state of matter which resists deformation the most because atoms are closer together.

j/k. to me it means staying in course, not deviating to do anything silly at any point.

Solid generally means that they aren't likely to just blow off their stack to someone for no logical reason.

They open with the standard ranges, they c-bet the right amount the right frequency...etc.

solid = ABC poker. Play better cards than your opponents are, and play them aggressively.

Varying your game and making the occasional "play" are fine - occasionally, against opponents who are paying attention. If you're the most experienced person at the table, ABC poker rules the day.

Use the term Solid as a synonym for Reliable or Dependable and it all makes more sense.

Solid is in the medium of the spectrum with weaktight in the left and loose passive in the right.

It has to do with the value/bluff ratio and pot-size. When the pot is small and opponents range still contains a decent amount of weak hands it is ok to bet or raise with nothing, but when the pot is bigger and villains range tighter a solid player tend to have the goods. Triple-barrelling with pure air to move someone off top pair is not something a solid player would try.

The consensus of this thread could be summed up as The exact opposite of how Erik played last night when he donked away 2 racks.

dont tilt, make stupid calls, or anything out of your routine. dont chase cards that are too expensive, and factor in odds when making decisions.

make the RIGHT decisions, even if they don't always pay out the most.

Solid players (for example) don't chase flushes and straights on paired boards.

Another example, solid players don't call with one card straights to chop small pots.

Solid is smart, not rash.

Yellow chips ($385) playing 2/60 spread limit, which plays a lot like 1/2 NL. I actually played pretty well for much of the 4-hour session but went into full-blown donkey mode for most of the last hour during which I made some stupid plays that I knew at the time were not-solid stupid plays.
