I'm thinking of reading 'The Theory of Poker' by David Sklansky. Is it still worthwhile or superseded by other books on poker? I do want to focus on either limit or no-limit hold'em and I noticed that The Theory of Poker is more general. So: still worthwhile? or better to spend time on other poker literature?

What are your goals or interests---specifically, what would you like to gain from reading said book?

Yes, it is still worthwhile, while most of the examples in the book are based on limit, they are applicable to all forms of the game. If you want to become a good poker player, rather than a good hold'em player, this sort of thing is kind of useful

I believe there's been a new book which adapts for NLHE for reasons unknown, which I've not read so can't comment on it

It's been a long time since I read it but I recall my opinion at the time being that it could be useful for beginners but not much help for intermediate+ players. IMO there are many better books out there but it depends on what you're looking for.

If you're going to buy from Sklansky get his new version of the book. I haven't read it but I assume it should be more up to date and better apply to the games that are more popular today. The old book has a lot of obsolete concepts even for limit.

I’ll try to find the book lying around and re-read to give an objective and fair critique. I’ll bump the thread when I do. In the meantime I’ll stand by recommending his new book instead.

Here's a thread on the new book and some reviews about it, including mine.

TL,DR: It is updated for NLHE vs. the original book which was for primarily limit. Has some concepts that are useful to the next level up from beginner player, but there are no ground breaking ideas for someone playing 5/10 live or better. It shouldn't be the first book you buy.
