I'm a beginner practicing on PokerStar with play money. Any idea how I could have minimized my loss here:

UTG - UTG (P883,070.00)
MP - MP (P612,800.00)
CO - CO (P2,052,380.00)
BTN - BTN (P575,300.00)
SB - SB (P1,024,320.00)
BB - Hero (P1,166,570.00)

Preflop: (P15,000.00, 6 players) Hero is BB with K J
1 fold, MP calls P10,000.00, 1 fold, BTN calls P10,000.00, SB raises to P30,000.00, Hero calls P20,000.00, 1 fold, BTN calls P20,000.00

Flop: T K 6 (P100,000.00, 3 players)
SB bets P40,000.00, Hero raises to P80,000.00, 1 fold, SB calls P40,000.00

Turn: T (P260,000.00, 2 players)
SB bets P60,000.00, Hero calls P60,000.00

River: 4 (P380,000.00, 2 players)
SB bets P100,000.00, Hero calls P100,000.00

Total Pot: P580,000.00
SB shows K A (two pair, Kings and Tens)
Hero mucks K J

SB wins P548,100.00

i think the takeaways are

1: learn about max spr you want for stacking off with 1pair type hands, i think somewhere <5-8spr realm

2. isolate with hands that often make top pair, u don't really wNna multiway with top.pair

Seems fine to me, maybe once he's called your minraise and keeps firing again you can think about letting it go, but combination of villain's pathetically weak sizing + we still have top pair + play money so decent non-zero chance he's clowning with worse means we need to pay it off

The Turn sizing, even in play chips, screams weakness or at least a weak hand. Now you have to define a weak hand compared to yours. Tx is now ahead. Doubt a 6x. Could be a OES/FD, AA-JJ, Kx

The sizing on the River is again 'weak' so you almost have to call it down, but what are you beating that goes bet/call, bet, bet here?

If anything I don't think you want to raise the Flop with so many bad cards that can come out and a Player leading into you .. Although KJ looks decent here I'm not sure we want to build a pot 'protecting' it via a raise. I probably wait to raise on the Turn, even this card is a good one. You can easily raise/fold the Turn T here IMO.

Play chips are a good way to get to know the game and experience 'game play', but don't rely on 'how' the game is played. It's best to get into the micro stakes. I'm actually surprised to see how this hand played out without a spaz all-in. GL

I don't like the flop raise size, larger would have been more polarizing. His turn sizing is suspect, but the fact that he fired all three streets would lead me to beluieve that TPGK is no good. But in a play money game, SB's range is too wide to fold TPGK as played.

You had a chance to bluff him, as your play looked a lot like Tx, but there is a good chance he gets stubborn with TPTK. In play money or microstakes games, there is often not a lot of fold equity.

Thanks all for the insights, I've learned a few very useful new concepts here. I do plan to transition to micro stakes asap.

It's extremely hard to take anything from playmoney hands. However, the main takeaway here is actually that this hand is too weak to raise flop with. KJ is not a super strong hand on these flops (especially multiway) so we really just want to pot control and manage our way to showdown.

This is a midstrength hand that wants to showdown for cheap, so we can just call flop, mostly call turn, and maybe make some river decisions. By the betsizing used in this hand we just have to call down though.

@dabei Maybe I am on the nitty side ? But calling the SB raise with 2 guys behind you with a marginal hand Like KJ off suit from
early position is kind of like asking for trouble. I would have folded before the flop without hesitation.
IF MP comes over the top are you really that comfortable calling a 3 bet with KJ off ?
This spot was an EASY fold for me as played once SB raised and I am not closing the action.

He's getting 3:1 pre and has position on the raiser. If one of the limpers backraises then you can get out knowing full well you're behind, but folding for just one raise is nitty, yes

Would have been better to raise or fold preflop. a call is way too passive with a hand link KJ, unless its suited, or you have position

Yea I get what you said BUT you have to remember a couple of things.

1 you have TWO guys behind you. If just one of then calls but does not 3 bet then you no longer have position.

2. The guy is a beginner and playing this type of hand without position and in the described situation its likely to get sticky.

I agree that if the 2 guys behind fold before the flop its not a bad spot BUT I would STILL advise a beginner to fold this spot as described.

most of the replies posted so far appear to come from nerds and virgins. You simply overvalue top pair in a 4 way pot. especially when play money zombie mindset is to basically check the box for insta-call every time they see. 2 high cards, hence the board smashes their range.
