Session length? Session length?

Looking for opinions on length of poker sessions. Im a relative beginner who is working on building a bankroll from 10NL.

I currently play 2 to 3 hours five days a week as that is what my concentration will generally allow without tilting etc. Is this a acceptable amount given that I routinely hear people putting in 30-40 plus hours per week?

Thanks and have a great day.

I don't think 1) there is an answer to this question; and 2) if there were one it shouldn't matter to you. Play as much or as little as you are comfortable playing. So, therefore, I guess there is an answer - and that is that whatever you want to play is acceptable. Don't use other people as a guide for what you "should" be doing. After all, this is a game, and meant to be for enjoyment.

Play as long as it feels comfortable for you and as long you can play A game and be focused

The most critical thing to be able to do is to ba able to analyze your own play, emotional state, and mental state.

You should play as long as you are playing well. If you notice your attention drifting after an hour, and you are doing a lot of passive plays, or if your are getting angry and are steam raising, or if you are so sure that you are going to get sucked out on that you start folding +EV hands because you are snakebit, these are all signs that you should reset or leave.

But the key is to spot these behaviors. Always be questioning the plays you made and why you made them.

Only you can answer the question of how long you should play. But to answer that question, you have to learn how to answer the question 'How am I playing right now?'

And if the answer is 'I am playing badly', you need to figure out why and how to fix it.

It also depends on whether you are playing recreationally or as a side income vs playing professionally. If you’re counting on your poker income as your sole means of support, then you need to figure out a way to keep playing winning poker for more than 2-3 hours per day; you simply won’t be able to put in the volume needed to make a living by playing 2-3 hours per day. If you’re not trying to play professionally then by all means play when you want to, for as long as you want to/are playing well.

Of course if you are trying to play professionally and you simply can’t maintain a winning game for more than a few hours at a time, then maybe you should reconsider the decision to play professionally. Putting in more hours won’t help if you aren’t playing winning poker during those hours.

When you are first leaning poker it's more about your mental state .. am I keeping my emotions under control and/or am I playing different than I 'should' be.

Some Players change when they have profit .. others change when they've lost a couple BIs, typically for the worse. In either case you need to learn to recognize the change in your mental state and step away or at least stand up for an orbit to re-center your thoughts.

Once you're really comfortable with the game, you then 'should' develop some sixth senses that tell you if you're just running bad or playing bad. That is a key decision point.

Another key is whether the particular table you are playing is 'worth' playing. Even if you've lost some hands it could be 'very' correct to stay at this table due to the dynamic.

Generally speaking Players play too long when losing and don't play long enough when winning (scared money syndrome).

Once you start to think in terms of money, protection of stack and not BB, then it's probably time to step away.

Lots of Players don't realize that once you are deep (3-4 BI in your stack) that it's different poker than when you first sat down (as long as there's another stack as big as yours). As long as you're comfortable making these adjustments, then keep playing and take advantage of your stack size for pressure.

I've lost lots of BB going into semi-lockdown or just trying to ride out the rest of the night until the closing bell .. not wanting to be labeled a cash-n-dasher. But you can't worry about what others think, especially online. GL

2-3 hours was pretty much the limit for me years ago. Could do it twice per day, though. Now, 4 hours is peanuts, as it doesn't require as much attention for me anymore. As long as one can handle the boredom and recover enough to avoid a long-term load, it is easy.

2-tabling, or 1 fast-poker table, doubles the number of hands and is manageable to most players with some experience.

The fast poker tables might not build a roll, but in PLO (not in NLH, as too nitty) it gives reasonable competition to build skill when the regular PLO tables are too loose (a less useful skill later).

If you play 100 hands an hour and win at 5BB/100 you make 50 cents a hour. times that by 15 hours you make $7.50 a week. over a year you make close to $400.

now can you beat the game at 5bb/100 and actually play 100 hands an hour? I suggest you play 3-4 handed and get good at that rather than full ring or even 6 max full table. now with session lengths just add a extra 30 mins. You might wanna switch to a fuller table and play tighter when you get tired. So put your 2-3 hours in and once you feel you have a had enough go play full ring or 6 max full table and grind out a extra 30 mins or longer but just play tight and just focus as much as you can. I play MTTs which can last for 12 hours and can easily play 5 hours at 1 table live and online. I usually play tight in the beginning and don't focus too hard until it gets to certain stages. Cash games you can do them same perhaps if your playing with opponents who are getting tired over 2-3 hours. You might see stupid things been done online and that could give you a clue that they ain't playing at their best.
