Returning player- book advice still valid? Returning player- book advice still valid?

Hello everyone.

I’m returning to online poker after about 8 years away, I played limit previously and after a little reading of mr miller & sklansky was a small winner at microstakes...say about 2-4 bb/100.

i am now returning...but for various reasons...switching to no-limit cash games (at micro stakes at first). So i’m a beginner at no limit!

I have some 2+2 books from back then that i was hoping to learn from.

I’ve seen some online posts saying that some books have advice that is out of date.

Whats the community feeling on the below books - are they still generally a good place to learn from? Any must haves i’m missing?

Small stakes hold em
Hold em poker for advanced players
Harrington on cash games v1 and 2

(These are circa 2010-2012 editions)

P.s., i’ve heard mutterings about ‘ poker solvers’, can anyone fill me in? (What are they used for? Are they expensive?difficult to learn? )

All replies appreciated.

I'm returning after 10 years and Harrington was outdated then.

I would focus on some more up-to-date videos.

These books are specifically for fixed limit holdem. Most games these days are No Limit, thus most the tactics in these books will not apply.

I would say youtube is the best place now for advice. There are lots of streams of live play that are great.

Just look for any content that explains why you're doing something and then ask yourself it it applies in the games you're playing.

For example, if an old books says always cbet.
Then that's probably a bad/outdated book.

If it says, we always cbet 50% pot here because our opponent folds more than 34% of the time.
Then you can ask yourself, are my opponents today folding more than 34% of the time?
If yes, you can always cbet.
If no, you can adjust and cbet less often or look for a more optimal way to cbet.

This goes for any old and any new content.
Think about it for yourself, don't just blindly accept anything someone else is telling you to do.

Some of the concepts in old books are still going to apply.
A lot of them are still going to work at the lowest stakes where people play bad.

Other concepts will be terrible and even the worst players will see right through them these days.

No, they are not.

The best books out there about NLHE are Matthew Janda's two books.

How about something newer like Grinders Manual?
