Rely on Math/Technology or Experience Rely on Math/Technology or Experience

I'm relatively new to the online stuff. I just play with play chips on a few sites and am just starting to dive into the lower buy ins where you play for like nickels and dimes.

I'm curious as to how much you rely on math and technology (Expected Value, Odds, Software or even programs you can enter your hand into quickly like a spreadsheet) and how much you rely on your experience (self experience, knowledge of other players, table position, etc)?

I have this idea that there are people on here just crunching numbers constantly in programs, analyzing every hand after, running numbers while playing, and there are others here who just casually play, keep odds/past hands in mind and just use their knowledge of the game in general?

Which do you prefer, and which do you find successful?

I'm just getting into it, but my idea is that one should know what expected value is, your pot odds, and be able to figure out simple pot odds and implied odds to an extent, but other than that you don't need to do so much number crunching. Maybe keep some odds sheets near you to refer to and some player notes and calculations you run into a lot, but the rest I feeljust comes from knowing how to play hands with regards to your positon, opponents etc.

I could be wrong but I'm just curious as to how some of you play, what you use and what you find helpful while playing.

You run numbers and go through denarius before/after you play so you know what the correct play is when you are in the middle of your session

Most players on 2+2 will use a HUD so they dont have to keep track of numbers, the HUD does it all for them. Its a billion % better than relying on memory.

The trouble with relying on experience in poker is you do not know if your experience is correct. The trouble with relying on maths is you don't get a feel for player tendencies so can't pick up on what you can exploit. Need both imho - you don't start and say "I'm going to be a feel type player" or "I'm going to be a maths type player".

Both, and if you don't use both you are missing a huge part aht will allow you to be a winner.

Both.
A common situation you find yourself in is when a player bets into you and you have the odds to call. In terms of mathematics you simply call. End of story.
But in terms of experience, you have to ask yourself "Why has this person given me the odds to call?" It could be that they are a good player who is trying to suck you in, or it could be that they simply don't understand basic math.

I suppose the art of the game is knowing when experience overrides math or vice versa.

Unless someone is on the more advanced stages of being an intermediate player I would suggest they do not have the experience to know when their experience should override the maths In other words, when starting out one should concentrate exclusively on building a strong fundamental ABC game based on maths and only once this is nailed down then start changing things based on experience.

I guess this is just about the perfect answer.

Poker isn't a skill, its a skill set. Practice them all and use them all to improve your game.

Arguably, it's all mathematics. (Or economics, I guess.)
