Questions about transition: cash to SNG Questions about transition: cash to SNG

Hello all,

I'm a beginning poker player, played for 2 months now, mostly playing 6max which is also what I specialized in studying during my time playing. However, I want to play SNGs from now on, probably the 18m ones. As you could probably think, I'm a complete noob at SNGs. I know about the basics like push/fold situations, etc... but I think with that information alone I won't be a winning player.

Therefor I have a couple of questions I would like to see answered, which will definately help me out in the beginning. Here they are:

1. What kind of bankroll management should I be keeping myself at for the 18m SNGs?

2. Are there any articles, books I should definately read before starting?

3. Which kind of poker software could help me become a better SNG player, I heard something about ICM/SNGwiz. What is it used for and how does it help me?

4. What kind of 6max knowledge will be of great use making the transition to SNG?

5. I played 4-to-6 tables at cashgames. Is this also a good amount of tables to learn SNG?

I think these questions will definately help me out while starting to learn a new type of game, thanks in advance.

Friendly greetings

1 - i'd go with 50 buyins as a minimum, ideally more
2 - the moshman book is pretty solid, as are the links listed in the STT forum
3 - icm's a fundamental concept on understanding why you should shove or not in a given spot, sngwiz helps you plug leaks. software isn't anywhere near as important as in cash, at least for real time info
4 - playing shorthanded mostly, and in the very early levels when you're somewhat deep
5 - i'd start with less if you're just starting off, say just a couple

Hey sixfour,

thanks for answering my questions, they will be of great use. I already did ICM for 150 hands. And I answered 79% of the times right, is that good already?

I also saw there are shorthanded SNG's, turbos and hyper, are they also good to start out with, they seem more fun since I'm used to 6max.

hey, i did the opposite as you, i played sngs for over a year and now am starting to get into more and more cash games.

1. swings are bigger in sngs than in cash games so you want about 50 buy ins, but you have to be willing to move down.
2. moshman's book is pretty good, there are tons of good articles all over internet that are very helpful.
3. you should probally get sng wiz to start, will help ypu understand ICM.
4. while the formats are very different it is still the same game, so don't get to phyced out.
5. i would start with less than 6 tables to start, gradually move up when you are profitable and comfortable

yes short handed sngs are just as good to learn, there is different stratagies for 6 handed to 9 handed and more. so i would stick to 1 for a bit before you play with a bunch of different ones.

and i would start with turbos because when you get to higher stakes they are the only games that fill, so it helps being used to the fromat when you begin.
