Hello!

Can someone please explain me, why in HU situations with 10BB is profitable to shove hands like J4s, 74s or T8o? Avarage player will call only with hands who beats our hand. In long term I will always lose when my opponent call my shove with hands like J4s, 74s or T8o. I understand that I am stealing blinds with that kind of hands, but most important thing is to win a tournament not to steal blinds.

if stealing blinds is +EV it helps you to win the tournament

How can I calculate that EV is good at this situation?

The cost and value of the blinds gets underrated. Just some thoughts to chew on.

One pays 25bb per 100 hands in a 6 seated game (and that’s not even counting ante). (100 hands / 6 hands per orbit * 1.5bb per orbit)

The idea of crushing a cash game is winning 5bb/100 hands.

The blinds are the catalyst for why one is forced to play anything other than AA

The lower the blind/stack size ratio is, the less hands one has left to wait around for premium hands else get blinded out.

(Just some at work rambling)

People had worked this out fifteen years ago, you look up a chart that's probably etched into slate

In a situation where you can only shove or fold, the bottom of your shoving range will be 0EV. These hands are net losers when called, but they make up for it by winning the blinds.

HU, no ante, players start with 10bb effective, 0.5bb/1bb blind structure. The BTN can only shove or fold.

EV of shoving
= 1.5bb when they fold,
= 10bb when they call and we win
= -9.5bb when they call and we lose

EV = (1.5bb * fold%) + call%(win%*10bb - lose%*9.5bb)

BB will call with any hand that has at least 9/20=45% equity against the betting range.

In most small online tourneys and in most daily live tourneys, the BB will usually call a lot less than that.
