Playing so tight I'm blinded out! Playing so tight I'm blinded out!

Seriously, I keep trying SnG tourneys and I play very very tight (I followed Harrington's Conservative approach) but I always end up getting blinded out after they get so big.

It always seems that when I do get a good hand like QQ, AK, KK, AA that I'll put in a 3xBB raise and EVERYONE folds... therefor not winning nothing but smaller blinds. Eventually I just end up getting blinded out.

This is frustrating!

As your stack gets smaller your vpip gets larger

or let me correct myself, as your stack relative to the blinds gets smaller your vpip gets larger

Perhaps you need to open up a little when you're in LP. I've read Harrington's books, I'm fairly conservative as well, but by the sounds of it, you're ultra-conservative. Try opening up a bit more in late position and trying to take advantage of the smaller stacks when you're in a good spot in relation to the antes/blinds.

You need to open up a lot (OP). You are an open book to your opponents. You only play good hands. They're probably noticing that, so when you play and they don't have awesome hands, they just get out of the way, give you the blinds, and let you bleed to death, orbit by orbit.

See the obvious bit of usefulness here? When you bet, they get out of the way. Now, if everybody folds when you bet, what cards can you play?

Nobody can tell you how much more to play. I think it's kinda "feel", and I'm just getting there myself, but you can safely play more than you are now. If you have a super tight table image like it sounds like, you could probably even just std raise 72o on the button, cuz who's going to believe your range consists of QQ+ and 72o? :P Nobody.

Try a little experiment.

Play 20 SNGs thare are way lower buyin than you are used to. Play your standard tight approach for 3 levels, then start playing as wild as you possibly can. If someone bets, 3-bet them. If there are limpers, raise the hell out of them all. If you are in the BB and the button raises you, 3bet allin with your 25o.

See how you do. You'll probably be surprised ... and you'll probably start to see a happy medium that is way more profitable than your current plan of nut-peddling.

And btw ... between the two ... crazy aggression is way better than nut-peddling.

You say you've read Harrington's book(s)? The best thing to take from Volume 2 is all his stuff on M.

If you haven't read it, go read it. If you HAVE read it, read it again because you're not applying it.

Position is more important than your cards. It's fine to be a nit in early position but from middle to late you need to open up.

If you're on the button and it's folded to you there's an argument for raising with just about anything but the crappiest of hands. If you're laying down T9 or Q8 in these positions to let the blinds fight it out you're letting way too many pots get away.

Think of it this way, when the pot is folded around to you, the game has become shorthanded. In the CO it's a 4 handed match. On the button it's 3handed. SB it's now a HU match. You need to slide your range dependent on this and your opponents perceived calling and 3bet range. Stealing blinds is super-important in SNG, particularly in the later stages when the game gets shorthanded.

Awful advice, despite talking a bit about 10 man sngs, all the stuff in harrington vol 2 is geared towards MTTs or rather tournament with a non flat payout structure.

OP, there is a STT (single tables tournaments) Forum here on 2+2 .. I'd visit that ... look up the concept of ICM and learn to play push/fold poker once your stack drops below 10BB
