OK so I won a local $10 buy in tournament at a pub down the road from my house here in Sydney. I got some cash as well as a ticket to play in a tournament where 1st place is a 14K package to the WSOP main event.
There are 300 people in this game. I am mostly an online player and don't have much experience live. My style is TAG. I bet hard when I hit and if I go out its most likely because of a bad beat. I do my best to just play whats given and make the right decision. What else can I do right?
Anyway, i've read the MTT forums but im still not sure what an amatuer player like me should be trying to do in the beginning? Some say be aggressive, others say protect what you have until the 4th level.
Well if it's basically winner takes all you are going to have to accumulate all the chips. The player standard will probably rise as the field shrinks so I'd say try and get chips early if you can.
just imo
Accumulate chips as early as possible, don't be afraid to ship your monsters. I wouldn't really play tag in the tourney I would definitly loosen up and widen your range as you won't see a lot of hands like online. But don't loosen up to a point where your spewing.
Yea I would play small ball early and try to stack some ppl then switch up my game to stealing like crazy from LP once the blinds get high and get paid off when I actually have a real hand.
Small Ball is your best bet, And try to only play IP Unless you have monsters. Let super aggro players bet into you when you have the nuts and beat the hell out of the tight passive players.
Play however your are comfortable/best. Small ball is not any better than playing more "standard." If you aren't comfortable/experienced playing looser, don't. Just think about each decision analytically, and make the best choices you can.
Well I made it to about 70th place. I don't think I could have played any better. I just didn't win my coin flips at crucial times. Sucks because I felt that I was the better player than most at my table.

I always have a blast live, even if I lose. I think if I ever got serious about it I could be a grinder. I know I have infinitely more patience than anyone else I know though, so that might have soemthing to do with my opinion.
I can respect that at least. Even cashing in 20-30% feels like **** when you know you're better than over half the field :-/ The sheer volume you can attain online helps so much.
