I play both forms of the game, tournaments live and ring games on-line and still very much in the learning mode.

From what I’ve learnt so far, one of the main differences between the two games is the size of your stack is more important in tournament poker whilst hand reading is more important in cash games. (I maybe wrong)

After his huge win Antonio Esfandiiari was asked if things change playing against people who don’t think a million dollars isn’t a lot of money.

He replied “………you get two cards, your opponent gets two cards. So you just have to play the chip stack, the position and the player……”.

Could someone please lead me in the right direction for learning how to play the chip stack. I have a basic understanding of ICM and have read Kill Everyone but I would like to look at this important skill in more detail.

What would be the best way to go about it?

Your thoughts on this concept would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

ICM isn't going to help you in ring games, because it's a tourney thing, and at that mostly SNGs.

What you need to do is study the form of ring games you play the most and microlimit tournies. This can be done by going to the appropriate sub-forums on here.

Run a google search for "Nash Equilibrium poker charts". That will show you the hands you can shove (or call shoves) with for specific stack sizes (in big blinds) in heads up situations. And download ICM Trainer Light: http://www.pokerstrategy.com/software/8/

Thanks Arty

Are these more for SnG's.

Apppreciate that and I will certainly take a look but I thought there would be more to it than charts and programs.

And not just about the shoving stage of a tournement

What about the stage of tournements when you and your opponent have 30/40/60 blinds

Is there any literature on the idea, COTM or books

Simplistic, but you're on the right lines.

Kill Everyone is a good book...get a handle on everything in it. Also a very good book, from a completely different perspective...Every Hand Revealed, Gus Hansen.

Best training tip. Play bucketloads of low buy in MTT SNG 45s 90s and 180s. Do not play STT SNGs.

Key to winning...learn how to play aggressively when the antes come out. More than one way to do this...my way is play early for a big stack and then bully, bully, bully. not everyones cup of tea, but it is beginning to show results for me.

Final tip...decide what table image you want and make every play fit it.

All tourney advice above...for cash (assuming you're not a multi-table grinder) learn to read. This takes years.
