that is what I thought too. The people I was playing with said I had to be able to match the 8 to something else on the board.

they are misintepreting the rule that you have to use EXACTLY TWO hole cards - confusing, eh?

their definition of use is not for kicker ...

I would think that if you played it like that, you could only win with straights, flushes or a full house. I just wanted to make sure that I knew what to do before placing large bets. Thanks for the info.
