I'm pretty confident that neither chess nor backgammon will help your poker significantly. They may be great games (I love chess, don't really care for or understand backgammon), but they are just far too removed from poker to give you many relevant lessons. Though I would guess that Backgammon may be more applicable.
I say this despite making constant chess analogies when discussing poker. Well, maybe chess will help you understand my analogies... hehe.
