NL10 with 50 buy-in's is pretty safe. NL16 with just over 30 is okay too, but not as safe. And NL25 with 20 buy-in's isn't very safe, but isn't terrible. If you don't plan on reloading, play NL10 until you know you can beat it over a decent sample size like 50k hands and then move up. If you don't mind reloading and have some experience with online poker, 16 or 25 is fine.

Would help if we knew something about how good you are.

Jumping into $10nl, if you've never played poker, simply because you have $500 to play with, wouldn't be the smartest move you could make.

Good Luck.

What is your focus? Cash, SNGs? What site? Experience level? Ability to reload?

In theory, unlimited. A downswing can come in many forms, but simply, a downswing is a period of time that you run below your expected win rate - thats BE or making a huge loss.

BE stretches lasting 100k hands is not uncomom for a 4bb/100 winner - particually at the small stakes but not beyond possible at the micros (Looser players tend to suck out more. So it applied to live too)

Its also not uncommon to loose 10BI in a downswing. Regs will say this is a monthly thing online, especially at 6 max.

20BI is not uncommon, and many people only concider 30BI to be a standard downswing, 40 + being harsh - all of which can occur no matter how well you beat the games.

Its not uncommon for players to have loosing months online. Hell, Ive had two in a row and thats super standard. (not much play in the second and I was at Micro-rigged-gaming)

It is, in theory, possible for a bad run to last 1 million hands.

Also, what hourly rate should a solid player be making at 1/3 NL?

Live? God knows. I think people belive somewhere in the region of 20bb/100 - 30bb/100 is achieveable... but dont take my word.

Online, you would be doing very well at 4bb/100 - Most players would settle for 2bb/100...

Lastly, how many live hands would you say a poker player needs to play before he is a proven winning player and not just on a good run?

As I said before, varience isnt a nice thing. 100k hands of BE are not rare online. However, as your win rate improves, your varience decreases... I dont really know, but if your crushing the games after 10k hands live, id say your doing well... So long as you dont feel like your getting lucky anyway.

Still, I wouldnt go pro untill I had played a year at least...

Because each hand doesn't have a history of how good or bad you've been running, your future results are just as likely to be a downswing as your previous results were. So there is no maximum time - some top players have reported downswings that last months or even years.

If you know your edge (ie, theoretical winrate) and bankroll, you can calculate the mathematical risk of going bust (ie, suffering a downswing that uses up all your bankroll). This might be a good place to start.

It depends on the game you play of course. If you're playing cash, each hand is considered separately so swings happen quite quickly. If you're playing big field tournaments, the whole tournament is a separate unit, so a bad downswing could last years if you're only playing big tournaments.
