I remember a few posts which gave answers to that common question. However, no fixed amount is generally correct. To be safe at the next level, you need both a bankroll and skills. No amount of money will give you skills.

If you are a marginal winner at your current level, you might be a losing player at the next level. Losing players will burn through any amount.

A solid winner does not need as much as a marginal winner needs to have the same risk of ruin. Doubling your win rate cuts your bankroll requirements in half, and vice versa.

The achievable win rates decrease as you move up in stakes, so you should need more buy-ins as you move up.
