The tides have turned from 10 to 15 years ago. It used to be that aggressive play would print. Now it’s the opposite. Find an aggressive player at your table and it’s an easy way to make money at micro cash. What has changed? Why is this?

Personally to an extent I think it was always easy to get money outta the aggressive players even 15+ years ago. There was just less of them back then. However I use to play 50nl which plays quite different then 2nl-10nl it seems. Players have advanced and learned over the years aggression and being aggressive is good. You see way more guys 3 betting preflop then you use too.

Besides I believe it Phil Helmuth(way back when his first book I believe) that said "It's always easier to let the donkey pull the cart up the hill then it is to try and push both the cart and donkey up the hill". Not a direct quote but very similar and you get the point. Since reading that my first rule of poker has always been never interrupt the donkey when he's doing all the work and pulling the cart up hill. It's the easiest money you'll ever make in poker.

You don't get good lags at the micros. You get aggro fish and bad lags. They both suck lol they might build a stack up quickly but if they stick around you get to see how quick they manage to lose it, and more id have to see it to believe it that those players were ever winning.

what traits seperate a good lag from an aggro fish

Loose is a relative term. A good LAG is loose relative to a typical TAG player, but that does not mean a good LAG plays garbage hands. A good LAG is playing 30-35% VPIP with just slightly lower RFI stats PF. A good LAG knows when and how to cbet effectively in order to maximally realize equity and maximize EV.

The aggrofish by contrast often is aggressive just for the sake of being aggressive. He will often have 50%+ VPIP stats PF, again with only slightly lower RFI percentages. He often will play garbage hands and generally will continue with aggression post flop almost regardless of the nature of the flop. Unlike the good LAG the aggrofish is easily beaten — simply wait until you hit a flop and let the aggrofish build a pot for you. He almost invariably will do so.

A fundamental difference between a LAG and a fish, by the origins of the names, is that the fishes "catch the bait" when you bet. That is, fish call big bets with marginal hands, especially on the flop. And when they do, that is when you have caught the fish.

On the contrary, a LAG simply open-raises a lot of hands PREFLOP. But they have a better understanding of postflop play and percentages, and won't necessarily call your bets with marginal hands on the flop like a fish.

Regarding preflop VPIP and PFR %, different people have assigned different stats for each profile. But I consider a LAG to have 28% VPIP, whereas fish having a higher one.
