ok so a friend was asking me about how to open up his game as right now he is playing extremely tight....decent player, understands positional play(i think), very disciplined and has a good grasp of poker math. oh and also loaded...this kid has daddy's money... i gave him some advice but im thinking now whether this was bad advice or not...any comments?
basically he tells me that every time he tries to open up his game he ends up losing money as he is not able to read hands that well (fold when he should) hence the tightness.
basically my advice to him was when playing out of the button and cutoff if you are only opening top 15% of hands (now) then instead of adding the next 10% (thus making it top 25% or whatever) add the absolute worst 5% of hands so you are playing your top 15% and the bottom 5%.
the reason i said this was because when playing the really crap hands you cant really stack off unless you flop big and folds are relatively easier to make when your steals are not working.
i told him practising this (at a lower limit) maybe a good way to learn to open up and should help him read hands better as well.
bad advice??? opinions?? anything you guys wanna suggest?
