For years I thought a hand like AK VS AQ, with a flop of 8AQAK was a jackpot. I asked recently and with a Google search I just figured out that a "Bad beat jackpot is aces full beaten by quads or better."

So an example of a jackpot would be something like,

AK VS QQ

flop: AAKQQ

There are many different requirements for jackpots depending upon where you are playing. Check out the rules before you play. Most common point of variance is are Quads required to be pocket pairs or is AAA23 a jackpot if one person holds AK and another person holds QQ. In addition all casinos I have been in require both cards for both players must play.

Foxwoods bad beat is lose with 8888x or better, and to qualify quads must contain a pocket pair.

Don't some rooms lower the requirements the longer it remains unawarded?

In the card room where I asked the dealer this question, a situation like AAA23 a person holding AK, "the kicker has to play" in order to be a jackpot.

There is no one standard as to what constitutes a jackpot; it certainly can and does vary from room to room. At one room I have played in there are two jackpots, a main and a mini jackpot. Quad 8s or higher getting beat is the requirement to win the main. It’s aces full of kings getting beat to win the mini. Obviously the mini gets awarded more often, and it usually is worth about 10-20% of the main.

No, they want it high because it draws in more players, they don't care because it's not their money. The only time it's lowered is when a room is closing and they need to empty out the piggy bank.

Yes, UK Grosvenor casinos lower it once a week, starts at quad Kings and if it gets down to quad Twos they leave it there until it's won.
