As I understand it, the point of BQ is to ask questions intended to improve your knowledge of the game and increase your skill at it.

How does knowing whether anyone else thinks of these things accomplish that?

This question seems semantically equivalent to "Are implied and reverse implied odds important to think about when playing poker", which is a perfectly reasonable for BQs.

OP - yes these things are important to think about while playing poker. For example, in no-limit holdem villain will rarely give you the correct odds to call with a flush draw. The reason a call may (or may not) be justified comes down to the likelihood that villain will pay you off when you hit (the implied odds). Similarly, understanding reverse implied odds is important when, for example, deciding to fold AJo preflop to a raise from an early position player.

OP ... I tend to agree that this one opens a big door to sarcasm.

I would turn it around and state that "Thinking about IO and RIO 'is' playing poker and not playing cards, which is what a lot of people do!!"

The 2 big points have already been given here ...

I used to think about IO/RIO quite a lot. After a while, those concepts are just something you know, so you make the right play without having to think too much about it.
Generally the only time I have to consciously think about (implied) odds is when I'm in a weird spot (especially multiway) where stack sizes mean decisions are a lot trickier than in standard/common spots.

Cliffs: You definitely need an understanding of IO/RIO if you want to be a winner in the long run, so think about those concepts now, and print money later.
