forgive me, but what is with the constant negative attitude toward TAG play??? TAG play does not mean nit, weak, or fish..it means that you are selective pre-flop ACCORDING TO THE SITUATION. I consider myself TAG and would be just as likely to raise A5o, 99, or 45s given the right situation (position, metagame, stacks, etc.). Also, many good players are a blend of styles..they may be TAGs pre-flop but very, vey aggressive and loose post-flop.

I also think its entertaining when opponents play to protect their egos. These players are actually very easy to read.

IMO TAG play is the blueprint of good poker playing- (because that is how most people learned and won enough to be able to branch out and learn other styles). Once a player has the bluprint, some style addendums can be added or altered to create a chameleon effect- including a LAG style- but the foundation is TAG play...again IMO as poker theory is fluid.

if i played only pocket pairs and raised everytime i played them would that be tag?
Holy ****. EVERY player should open raise pocket pairs in 6max, even if you're passive. But if you ONLY play pocket pairs, you're a frickin rock.

Why does nobody read my post? =( I'm a TAG. I squeeze JTs all day long.

This is such a great post. I have struggled with playing a more loose, LAG (and many times losing)style and only recently have I realized what is being said in this post. I haven't honed my poker skills well enough to be playing in such a style that required me to read the situation so well. All the implied odds hands get played, just more selectively! Thanks OP and Ro!

Your definition is too subjective. TAG or LAG is pretty easily identified by a combination of VPIP, PF-Raise%, and Blind Steal attempts.

What you do in any given situation doesn't mean you are anything. That is a single situation. Over the long run -- many many hands -- your VPIP, preflop raise% and steal percentage tell the story of the kind of player you are.

At $25NL, I am TAG. Why? Because my VPIP runs about 20% and my wins at showdown is pretty high. If your VPIP runs around 30% or more, you can start to call yourself loose. 40% is nutty loose.

Get poker tracker, holdem manager, keep a spreadsheet or whatever... and run it over several thousand hands. You will see the kind of player you are.
