Not sure if this has been done before but i figured it would be good for everyone to learn from other peoples mistakes. Mine are:

1. I wouldn't waste my time playing $1 DoN's on Stars
2. Follow strict bankroll management right from the start
3. Don't put my whole roll on the table (The first time i played (on bet365) i just used to put my whole roll on the table as i thought that was what you were supposed to do! )

What's yours?

Read all of the books. I thought I knew it all from watching TV

Play cash instead of tournaments.

I'd learn about rakeback before opening so many darned poker accounts.

I wouldn't have withdraw my roll twice at 5NL, I'd be well into 50NL by now had I not done that, put me back about 2 months at least. Withdrawing is one of the silliest things to do when you're at the micros and you're keen to progress to higher limits, it takes time to get that money back, and you lose the time you would have spent at higher limits learning newer things.

1. Instead of making silly little $20/50 deposits, i would just go all out and not be scared to deposit a few hundred. With $20 it's very difficult to get anywhere with no knowledge so it's always just wasted.

2. Run better.

  • Learn about rakeback
  • Focus on one game for the time being
  • Watch some videos geared towards microstakes players right off the bat
  • Buy HEM immediately
  • No shortstacking
  • No tournaments / SNGs
  • Don't listen to 'experts' who haven't got a clue
  • Live poker: don't focus on beating one particular player (the loose goose that always got lucky), but focus on a solid overall strategy

That's a lot. Wonder what I'd say if you asked me one year from now

The only thing i hated that ive done is deposit small amounts like $20.

Becuase i havnt got the roll to really play $2+ SnG's and $1 SnGs are dreadful.
Im not a cash player and grinding 1c/2c would drive me insane.

Why is everyone dogging sngs? I'm just starting out and am thinking about doing these, but it sounds like people think it's a bad idea. Why?

1. I had a really good start actually. I got 150% first deposit bonus, which is as good as it gets unless I had rakeback too.

2. BE MORE AGGRESSIVE. I didn't just play tight passive, I played dumb passive.

my guess about the ease of winning in cash games vs sng's is the utility of huds.

It is true that there can be a lot more money in MTT or cash than in SNGs, if you're playing the same number of tables. One of the major arguments in favor or SNGs is that you can get a ton or rakeback/FPPs. There is one player that claims to play 50 tables of DON.

There is no right answer to which game is "better". Consider:

Tom Dwan became a millionaire playing online cash games.
Shaun Deeb became a millionaire playing online MTTs.
Dario Minieri played online SNG, and bought a Porshe with his FPPs.
Havad Khan got started with online SNGs.

There are a lot of arguments for and against different forms/variants of poker, but "you can't make money playing x" is almost always false.

I would not tell anyone I know that I play poker. It has put some restraints especially in regards my family/friends that have hindered my progress.

Very true but Tom Dwan did actually start with playing SnG's.
From my understanding he started with around $50 and played $3-5 SnG's till he grinded up to around $300-500 and moved to cash.

I do find alot of people do suggest SnG's are the best way of starting your bankroll then moving to cash.

If I knew one thing before I started playing online I wish it were this, kickbacks also. I passed up so many kickback bonuses before I even knew what they were, such a waste!

I started out playing single table sit n' goes too. I think they're a great way to build a bankroll for a new player, it's a less complicated game. If I started out playing cash I might have gone busto and packed it in pretty early.
