I don't see why this happens to me! I don't see why this happens to me!

Well, I've been playing poker online on and off for a couple of years, and well, one of my biggest problems is losing my stack on the flop to fairly random hands when I have premiums (AA, KK, QQ, etc).

One example is today in a SnG, early stages, I had KK and I raised 5X BB, get called by somebody and flop is 789, they make a pot-size bet and at this point I don't think I'm beaten so we go all-in and they turn over 79 offsuit.

This happens to me so often, and when it doesn't happen, I usually take down a small preflop pot.

I am a newb I know, but come on now, maybe I am cursed?

If you are playing low stakes, its just something you need to expect. There are a lot of things that can help you:

a) The most important one you've done, and thats join this forum. Some of the best players in the world post on this site, with knowledge that is hard to find elsewhere.

b) Start posting hands you have trouble with, in the appropriate forum. If you have trouble with a decision in a sng, post it in the sng forum. Getting advice on hands you've had trouble with will help your game a lot.

c) Look through the forum, and read things such as stickies, they contain a ton of information. Also, look through hands other people post. Read the hand and replay it in your head as if you are playing the hand yourself. Before reading the replies ppl will post, think about what you would do and why you would do it. After thinking it through, read the replies and see if you agree with the suggestions made. If you agree with the others, cool, move on to the next hand. If not, think about what they are saying, and if you want to start a discussion (or sometimes get flammed) post why you disagree about the hand.... don't worry, people will have no problem stepping up and telling you how you are thinking about the hand wrong.

d) Just know that big pairs are going to get cracked, esp at small stakes by junk hands, it has to happen mathematically. You aren't cursed and it's not rigged. People will often times overvalue a big pair, and have a tough time folding it. Get more experience, and more knowledge, and you will start realizing that sometimes you just have to let that big pair go... it is afterall just 1 pair.

Stick with this forum, and you will def. see a change in the way you think about playing poker... glgl... and welcome!

i don't know how you usually play and how much you raise your 2nd premiums like AK, AQ, KQ and so on...
Just reading this, to me it looks like you made it obvious that you have a premium hand by raising too much preflop. Anyone who was paying attention and thought you migth have aces, and on top of that had suited connectors (best hand to beat AA-QQ apparently), they might have gambled and see if they can beat you on the flop.
If they hit the flop hard, they know you will committ yourslef with your overpair and your chips will become theirs.

Don't be disharted if you just win the blinds or very small pots with premium hands.. it is still a win and you shouldn't be disappointed with any chips you win, no matter how small the amount.
Also, make sure you are not kidding yourself and know that Aces and Kings are beatable, and it is a fact that you will lose with that hand on avarage once every five times.

Good luck at the tables in the future.

Thanks for the reply guys very helpful, both of you.

I guess I should have folded the hand, but sometimes I'm too proud, I guess, to let go of a rare hand like it.

Premium hands tend to either win small pots, or lose big pots.

If you're changing the size of your bet based on your hand value, stop that, you're giving away too much info.

Myself, I raise it up 3X the big blind (unless I'm in push/fold mode, in which case, I push) any time I raise preflop.

What stakes were you playing btw?

Because it def sounds like something that would happen in free-rolls, $2 sitngos etc....

It happens to all of us my friend, trust me. In the long run, however, you will be winning with those premium hands, assuming you play them right.
