How to proceed after flopped set?

It seems more often than not that after I flop a set that if I lead with a bet, most of the time people just fold. Is there a way to know if checking is better than betting in this scenario? I know you don't want to give people free cards, but it seems counterintuitive to bet most times. I'm just starting to take poker more seriously, so I'm open to input.
Thanks!

If you don't hit the flop, do you bet and people fold?

That's a good point. I would have to say that a good amount of the time when I continuation bet they fold also. I guess it's just so exciting when you see that set flop and you want to maximize the amount to win and it frustrates you when they fold. I didn't think about the times they fold when you continuation bet when you've missed the flop as well.

Very good point above.. but also, top set? Wet board? HU? Position? PFR? Passive/aggressive opponents?
You can bet for 'protection' on wet boards or check for deception on dry boards, especially when IP to give opponents a chance to bet Turn.
Poker is about ranges these days. Your opponents don't know you have a set and are going to react based on their connection to the board and whether the board hits your range. GL
