are you a retired millionaire?

if not look for another way to spend your time.

if so, the website pokeratlas will tell you what tournaments are happening in your area.

if you want to be a live MTT pro, please believe me you are wasting your time.

I prefer tournaments as well, OP, but I think people are saying it is an unstable and unreliable primary source of income given the variance and volatility involved. Cash games for a living are much more sustainable. So, as the first responder said, if you already have a very large bankroll and want to spend your days on the tournament circuit without the NEED to make money from them, go for it. If that isn't you, cash games for a steadier pay day with the occasional tournament thrown in for fun, is probably the better approach. Good luck!

since everyone in here is trolling, i'll give you real advice:

you want to download Poker Brat: The Phil Hellmuth Story on your kindle asap. obviously if you want to play live mtts, there's no better player in history to learn from than someone who won the WSOP twice in a row. I know this is his autobiography, but this will teach you the mindset of a champion, which is the hardest part of playing mtts well.

Second, move to a part of the country that has lots of tournaments. i recommend Indiana or Oklahoma - both states have casinos with massive WSOP circuit events that come through each year.

Finally, download Primed Mind and listen to the weird british dude count down from 100 when you're on the way to the tournament. this will add fedor holz' math skills to your hellmuthian mental game. unstoppable.

Other than the 1k tourneys with a big enough bankroll, one might get enough lower regular tourney action in the USA -- or there are such elsewhere also but they tend to be smaller but during like weekends perhaps (with entrance fees and the usual or more cuts).

Comparing that to playing any time you want as long as you want in cash games (1/2, 2/2, 1/3, 2/4, 2/5) if the rake is reasonable, playing only tourneys might not look as good anymore.

But I don't see it is not possible to play only tourneys also in the USA, especially if and as they figure to be softer than the cash games and the variance is only your buy-in, not stacks and stacks, and the fields might not be too large (100, 300 players is no problem, but 1k, 5k players is).

Don't let the cynics and critics here dampen your goals and dreams. A lot of the peeps here grind the cash games, that is what they are experienced at and successful doing. But if you enjoy the journey of a tournament and have a passion for it, like I do, then go for it.

Daily scheduled tournaments at casinos and poker rooms throughout the US are very soft and cash cows. You can average a win rate of 5 to 6 times your buy in at these $50 to $125 live tournaments, if you are competent. There are some great areas where you can get in 2 or 3 tournaments a day. Kansas City, Detroit, Chicago, Vegas, Tunica, Atlantic City, Louisiana, Iowa, Florida and others. If you live in a higher volume area with multiple tournaments running at the same time, it is easy to grind out a living. If you have to travel between tournaments, get hotels, eat over-price casino food and the sort, you can literally eat up profit margins at this level too quickly. Plan accordingly playing these low buy-in tourneys. Build up the bankroll and chase the dream.

Yes.

By the way how can travel costs/hotels/etc ever chew up profit margins at $1000/day? And why on earth do you need to build a bankroll when you can get $20k/month easily without effort and stress.

I can only go off what I have experienced. Who said anything about easily and without stress? Run a 10 to 15 tournament streak without a cash, doubting yourself and abilities while cranking through $1000 to $1500 of your bankroll. Variance exists in every format.

Go to the Flamingo in Vegas. $60 to $70 tournaments at Midnight, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 6pm and 9pm. You will find 90% fun players at these tournaments. Let's say I play 2 a day and do that for a week. 14 tournaments x $70 = $980 in entries. I will cash in these tournaments 5 times on average and have $2800 to $3500 in total winnings. Net $2500ish. Now, if I live in Vegas that is great. I can make $125K a year doing something I love. If I don't live in Vegas. I am looking at $120 to $150 a day in expenses. That is a large percentage of my total income.

Now if you live in southern Michigan and running between, Firekeepers, Detroit Casinos and Hollywood in Toledo. Figure your expenses on that. If I posted pie in they sky on my first post, I apologize. It is a grind and your expenses can eat up your profits if not careful.

So, yes it is possible to make a living playing low buy-in daily tournaments, they are very soft and yes it is possible to have an amazing ROI. Start looking for the largest guarantees that your bankroll allows you to play. If I was in Vegas I wouldn't be sitting at the Flamingo all the time that is for sure. But, I do want to play where the pro's are not and be where the largest amount of "fun players" are. Not your traditional line but it is profitable.

Netting $2500 on $1k buy ins is impossible in the long run. But even if it was, it wouldn't be stressful because even bricking a week in a row you still only lose $1500, which is less than you win on average in a week. A 250% ROI pretty much guarantees a profit every single quarter and barely any losing months.

So we're already down from 600% ROI to 250%. And yes the people playing these are so horrible it's hard to imagining how they found their way to the casino but the structures are so bad and rake so high that you don't have enough hands to capitalize on their stupidity. As a rule of thumb, the casino takes as much (or more) in rake as the average reg takes from the game. Sure, if you are the best player in the room you do better but if people were really taking 10x the rake out of the game casinos would increase their prices. It just doesn't happen.

Kelvis, You were right. I went through my live tournament numbers for 2017 and I was way off on my posting here. I played about 60 live tournaments mainly May thru September. My average WIN was 6.25 Buy-ins not 5 or 6 times each buy-in like I posted above. I actually averaged $150 win for every $80 entry ($70 Profit) So my numbers were way off in this post and 60 tournaments is really not a forecastable sample size.

However, if my focus over that year was to find the softest tourneys possible, my numbers would be closer to the 250% ROI mark. Guess it is just speculation on my part. I do have to say in my example about the Flamingo, I played 5 tournaments there over a couple days and took first twice for over $700 each. Maybe just the plus side of variance, maybe not.
