Every poker player should read this thread. After all, as with anything, if you are not trying to become the best then you really don't even have a shot to become average.

So, you pay yourself an hourly based on your winrate.

This makes a thread from earlier more relevant. We were all wondering if you should include promo wins as part of your winrate or track them seperately? Like $500 high hands. It seemed just like a fun who cares topic at first, but if you are paying yourself based on winrate I guess iut's more relevant on how you record these.

Great post. I think it's very helpful in leveling one's expectation on becoming a poker pro.

This is not true at all I hope you realize that.

There are many things people participate in not trying to "be the best at" that are way above average at.

I have a couple friends that play 2/5 with me that are total half assed pro's that are easily better than 90% of the people in the room.

You understand the theory is you pay yourself based on WR. Reality doesn't work that way -- you won't break your BR during a downswing to pay yourself the "hourly wage". Being self-employed in every business works this way: the owner gets paid last. Do whatever you want with the bonuses, they don't matter. As a poker pro, your BR must grow or you will go broke. The RoR calcs assume that you let your BR go to infinity, not that you remove everything greater than your 20 (40, 80, 100) buy ins. Pad your roll, or move it to an interest bearing investment. Just don't spend the windfalls until you're super secure in your roll.

When you have lived a little longer, you'll realise that cliche's like this are just pure bollox.

The great Richie Benaud, who passed away today, summed it up nicely.

"success is 90% percent luck 10% skill, just don't try anything without the 10%."

Tldr but I did skim the OP and it sure seems like a whole lot of work. If you are willing to put in that much effort go into Investment Banking or Big law instead and make some real money.

OK, I have just deleted a bunch of posts from this thread.

This is Beginners' Questions, where questions are posed and answered, and strategy advice given.

It is a forum for free discussion and disagreements. It is not for attacking individual posters regarding matters outside of the subject matter of the thread.

Hi Dgi, thanks for the post! A question: where i live there is no legal online poker. I wonder if something similar like Advancedpokertraining.com is a good alternative to play online? They have some AI behind the opponents, the tables are ranked in toughness and they keep a detailed record/statistics of your game...

Also, there is any new addition to your advice that has changed since you posted?

Thanks again.

very nice post, although I just recently came across this. I find the optimal path to be very, well...optimal for me and have been doing some parts of it over time.

Step #1: i've ground up a roll of around $600ish from an initial $25 playing 2nl-20nl(the latter being a shot before my location was prohibited to play during Amaya's acquisition of Ongame, then I switched to Stars and rebuild from there with $200 playing 5 to 10nl. Had some experience playing live (lowest here is equivalent to 25nl in $ equivalent) but I don't think I'll be touching that till I can crush 25nl online at least.

Step #2: started w/ sauce & fees 6-max guide, then moved on to the uNL library and archive stickies here, just recently came across Balugawhale's Easy Game series

Step #6: had access to a few vids like Learning Kristy series and a few others, will work from there

Step #7: definitely watching for entertainment. Still not interested how Dwan won with 86o or 72o since I can barely beat 10nl atm even when rolled for 25nl

Step #8: maybe considering it once I'm crushing 25nl or higher at a decent wr, aligned with step #1

Step #12: still keeping up with univ with decent grades, currently starting my last year

Step #20: if let's say im beating the games at a decent amount of at least 2x or more of a decent monthly salary here ($500~22,596 local currency, pay is so low that even callcenter employees who are supposedly the "big earners" for an average employee have a gross pay of around 17-18k monthly), so that's around $1k plus considering the costs of wires and stuff since I'm not too keen on sending checks until our local courier services do not screw us over. So until then, a regular paying income is still best

Amazing post really motivational and real at the same time I took a lot from this and I will imply your methods and advice on training for example the being extremely active on 2+2 forums and keeping a log on my hands. I know now that it takes much more to becoming a pro at least I know what to expect thank you for posting!
