When we say we lost a buy-in or up/down x number of buy-ins. Is 1 buy-in generally considered to be 100bbs? Or is it the amount that we normally buy-in for? I play 2-5 and usually buy-in for the $800 max. So if I'm tracking my buy-in wins and losses, should I use $500 (100bbs) or $800 (what I buy in for)?

Or do most people go by the PT stat for playing online. If so, is it 100bbs?

I know this is a basic and maybe dumb question, but I've never been clear on this.

in live we track slightly different than on line. I personally track my win rate in $/hr or bb/hr. I play in a game that is match the stack. So my "buy in" can vary quite a bit.

A buy-in should be defined by the Player themselves and is typically used to define a Player's bankroll level.

Whatever you typically buy-in for when playing your 'normal' stakes would be considered your base amount. If you are playing 1/2 and only sitting down with $100 at a time, then that's a BI (for you).

Player's may define the cash they take to the casino for a session by the numbers of buy-ins they bring with them.

Player's may also be referencing the number of times they've been felted during a session .. thus 'buying in' X number of times. The tournament term is typically 'bullets' but since each Player may not start a cash game with the same amount it defaults to 'buy-in'.

If you actually do track a bankroll, then there are 'rules' associated with what stake you should be playing based on the number of buy-ins in your bankroll in order to survive variance.

BI are not an exact science since there are Players who will continually top-off or add-on to their stack (as in a MTS game), but typically in conversation with another Reg they will describe their day based on buy-ins rather than an exact amount. GL

In my opinion the 100bbs comes from online.

Curious why this matters? Is it just the vernacular you are looking for when talking to peers?

If you are using this metric to decided Bank Roll Management / Risk of Ruin, you should be calculating based on win rate (bb/100 / bb/h) and total bbs in your roll.
