i can get wireless connection, but not wired., i.e. modem to laptop.

modem to router to laptop is fine.

I do - but stars connection is shabby to say the least. just been playing at ftp which is fine - read a big thread in the zoo from a while ago about similar problems, where sheer volume of players affects the connection. like when they closed all the play money tables the other day, it's because they are ****ed.

stars support are being cool though, and i'll send all my **** to them and hope they can help.

I suspect that your IP4 settings for your wired LAN network connection in control panel are set up differently to your wireless one (which probably autoconfigured itself). Probably one is set for DHCP and the other one isn't - the IP address & gateway are the most likely things to be wrong.

If all that sounds like total gibberish I can prolly fix it for you over teamviewer or skype or something at the weekend.

TBH though, I doubt that this is connected to your problems with stars.

(stars obviously just hates you)
