IPv4 has been the internet standard for numeric internet addresses of about 30 years now. They are like the internet equivalent of phone numbers. There is a limited number of them - about 4 billion - and like phone numbers the are running out[1] since everything electronic you buy connects to the internet.
IPv6 is the new standard that is gradually being phased in and will eventually[2] replace IPv4, but at the moment many computers and most home networking equipment are only IPv4. Your wireless is connected using IPv4, but not IPv6 because you wireless router probably doesn't support IPv6. That's not a problem since 99.99% of the internet is still IPv4.
[1] Just today there was a news report that the last blocks of IPv4 addresses have been assigned. This doesn't mean that there are no IP addresses available. its kind of the equivalent of the last phone area codes being assigned.
[2] Eventually being in the next 10-30 years.
