OK so I cashed 2nd (lucky this is not BBV, hit last three with a 2-1 chip lead over the other two combined but meh)
So I'm going to try and get my $15 up to $1k high-risk stylee but whatever.
If you are a serious poker player ( nothing to do with anything but INTENT) the first and only thing you have to do is to beat a game. BEAT IT. Not to make a profit short-term, but realise how your opponents play and why they play badly. Any game. Any level. Just feel you can beat it and have evidence.
I tried to move from LHE to NLHE without ever even mastering LHE and couldn't do it. Not a big loss number, just no idea what it was about. I'd moved from Lee Jones' 'Winning low-limit holdem' (2nd ed) to super/system with no clue. One sentence of Sklansky's (from memory) 'split-pot games favour a mathematical gambler over high games that favour an aggressive gambler' or some such. Not even realising that the split games Sklansky was referring to had no qualifier against the online games that were eight-or-better, his 'play for a scoop' stilll held me in good stead (I bought Zee's split -pot game book)
I built by BR from $220 to $1500 playing PLO8 FR games for 10 months because I could not understand NL holdem. When I moved back and tried NLH at microstakes I couldn't lose.
moral of the story is not 'I'm good at poker' it's 'if you can't beat microstakes ANYTHING over a good sample size you're doing something wrong'
Obv someone like raze has made 10x this in 100k hands and someone like pzhon could produce a graph that makes this look small. Fair play to them. The point is that I am a winner at 25NL and whatever else happens as long as I keep $300ish in my roll I can go and get more money from 25NL FR at will to finance 50NL or MTT shots or FTOPS or whatever.
When you have a game you can pwn you are a winner. 2NL? Great. $1 SNG? cool. Doesn't matter. Prove to yourself you are a winner.
Lots of people take these $20->$1k shots. Most of them are winning players and few of them succeed. There is no incentive to try if you are already a winning player except for prop bets (Nate) or force majeure (OP) or find a site you stopped playing at but have $5 in (me)
