I stubbornly continued to play the FR 2NL games.
Currently my bankroll is 33.46$ so im close to being rolled for 2NL now :-)
Most of my profit comes from winning a 6$ pot with my pocket jacks turning into a set on the flop and getting good action.

Im currently at 5K hands played. Does this mean I could just be on a hot streak? Or do you think that I have some basic understanding of the game?

Also, what is a good amount of hands to focus on getting together in a months time?

Hi guys - sorry, I posted this to the 'build a bankroll' thread, but I'm posting as its own thread when I saw chips4u's welcome thread. If this is a no-no, mods please delete. Thanks.

Anyway, I'm brand new to this website. Actually brand new to poker in general. I have never really gambled my entire life - I don't even buy lottery tickets - believing it to be mostly a fool's hobby. Well, actually, I do put in $5 into the March Madness pool, and I've put $5 on my favorite sports teams once or twice in the past. More as 'events' in the office than actual gambling, I guess.

But my company is having a 'poker night' in a couple of months, and since I generally take part in these social activities I figured that Casino Royale probably shouldn't comprise the totality of my poker knowledge. A bit of reading - and I realized that there was a lot more math, probability and skill involved than I had imagined. I'm a bit of a math/statistics geek, so I decided to have a whirl. I put in $40 in PS last week. Didn't even know what other sites were out there until a few days ago when I stumbled across this site.

I have done a lot of day-trading in the past. Generally successful, but I accepted an in-house position just as capitalism as we know it was collapsing (along with Lehman Bros), so who knows how I would have fared in the meltdown that followed. Anyway, one slight edge I think I might have from my day trading experience is that first and foremost, as a day trader your focus is a) protect your bankroll, and b) don't worry about your win ratio, keep your losses small and your wins big - and you'll be just fine. I often had a win ratio of less than 30% but stayed in the black because my average win would be 3-4x my average loss.

So my initial goals are to hold on to that $40 for as long as possible while learning the ropes – both poker, the lingo, how to use HEM, etc. I’m not even focusing on trying to increase that bankroll; as far as I’m concerned it’s my tuition to the school of poker. I’m using a trial of HEM, which has waay more information than I know how to use, but being the data geek that I am I love it – my excel sheets when I was day trading were works of art <g>.

Anyway, after a week and about 300 hands I’m basically treading water. Have really enjoyed it so far, event hough I had one bad beat, when I lost over $2.50 by raising/re-raising with AKs.

BR: $39.25

Hi and welcome!

Its good to know that I am not the only one that is new to the new world of online poker.

My bankroll is closing in on yours (33.46$) so I think it would be nice to compare our results.

I am guessing you play 2NL? Full table? Or 6-max?
The thread I liked the most was the one with a topic title like 'how to crush te micro's the complete guide'.
Thats where I learned you can and should fold AK sometimes

Best piece of advice I can give you is to try and get your chips in AFTER the flop, not before the flop.
And the 2nd word of advice: if you think you are beat: FOLD. There is no point in trying to convince yourself that the better is trying to bluff or is a terrible player.
I have folded my share of winning hands, but is keeps my bankroll safe.

Good luck at the tables!

Hi

Welcome to the forums. At least you know the main thing that a beginner needs to know - Bankroll Management. If yout not totally sure of it check out the stickies and the FAQ's.

To beat homes i think if you had a basic of pot odds and outs covered you'd probably be a winner in the game. Thats if its just a friendly game etc. Learn about position. ie play more pots in position than out of position etc

HEM and PT3 are great tools, use them if you like them but they cost money and most beginners could probably get by without them at the small stakes if they dont want to pay for them atm.

Also its good that you found stars first as you most likely would of signed up to a site without rakeback.

Any site you want to sign up for get RB. Because once you sign up youll likely not get it after. Stars dont do "Rakeback" and have their reward program instead.

Also when signing up for rakeback remember there are some shady sites but most are legit. Check out the 2+2 advertisers and google rakeback [should get most of the big sites etc], also remember to check around for different deals. Theres more than just the 27% RB etc you can get Rakeraces, HEM for free, subscriptions to DuecesCracked, Cardrunners etc etc [these 2 training sites also do rakeback i think]

Is there a stickie / FAQ on rakebacks, programs etc? I've seen a lot of people talking about it but still have no idea what it means. If I don't have it now with my Stars account am I SOL?

There are various rakeback forums in the 'Sponsored Support' parts of the Forums. (<<< Check out the list of Forums on the left hand side of the screen.) Guys in there will be only too happy to tell you anything you could ever want to know about rakeback.

(If you like free money, you'll love rakeback. The sites take a 'rake' from most pots. There are sites that make it their business to find new players for the poker sites. In return they get a chunk of the rake paid by those players. To encourage you to sign up via them, they give you some of your 'rake back'. Key thing is, you need to sign up for an account via one of these affiliates to get the rakeback. No good opening an account directly with the poker site and then trying to get it.)

Rakeback is not available on Pokerstars, so no, you have nothing to worry about. You're not missing out. Pokerstars have their own 'loyalty program' (or whatever they call it.) There are endless threads debating the relative merits of that program v rakeback.

At this stage, don't worry about it. Concentrate on improving your game BUT (and it's a big but) if you open accounts at any other sites, and it's possible to get rakeback, make sure you get rakeback. You may be playing only smallish stakes at the moment but if you move up in stakes your potential loss from not getting rakeback could be huge.

(The most obvious site would be FullTilt. Opening an account there and NOT getting rakeback would be a major blunder.)

Good Luck

Absolutely no way to tell this without looking at your stats and hands.

300 hands online and "treading water", you're probably way ahead of almost everyone else at a company poker night.

Even before I knew the rules of real poker, it always seemed just plain wrong to me where in films they keep re-raising and pulling extra money out of their coat pockets, throwing in the keys to their Ferrari, the deeds to the house or Liz Taylor's diamond earrings.
