Next week I will be starting to play 5nl online. Aim is to play 3 hours a day 7 days a week min. What should I study to beat the micros? I'm only 1 tabling and will move to live 1/3 2/3 once I got a roll of 6k. Probably a Good 12 months of playing online to do before I transition to live.

I just started back playing cash after a number of years playing mostly only MTT or not playing at all. I just took advantage of the Black Friday sale at Run It Once and brought Peter Clarke's "From the Ground Up" course which MrCrown recommended. Haven't made it threw the whole course yet but so far loving it, learning plenty and I feel Peter does a great job presenting his knowledge And of course for the price even if not on sale $49.99 it's right in the sweet spot for micro stakes.

I recommend Peter Clarke's course found here https://www.runitonce.com/courses/from-the-ground-up/ for the price in my opinion you can't go wrong even if the sale is over it's still a good deal and value at $49.99.

Cheers!!!

Good luck but your timeframe may be a bit ambitious. Just some estimates here: suppose you have a 10BB/100 win rate. That would be $5 per thousand hands. Getting to $6000 would require 1.2 million hands at that win rate. Assuming 30 hours per week and 40 hands per hour and that gives 1000 weeks or somewhere around 20 years to build that kind of roll.

Now you might be able to beat 5NL at a higher rate or move up in stakes, but a year to build a 6000 bankroll still seems pretty unrealistic. A better plan might be to go ahead and play 5NL for a few hours a day and also get some kind of part time job to supplement your income. If you could put say $50-100 per week from supplemental income toward your live roll plus your winnings (and experience) from your online play, you probably would be ready to start playing live much sooner and be in a much better position financially to make a go of it.

I'm putting away $120 a week towards the live roll. Online I will probably just play 5nl until I move to live. 20-30 hours of play time week in and week out. Aim is to play 1000 hours at 5nl.

That sounds more reasonable. The 120 a week will give you your live roll regardless of how your win rate at 5NL goes. You can just focus on your game while playing 5NL rather than how fast you are accumulating a bankroll.

From your op it sounded like you thought you would win your 6K live roll by playing 5NL foe 30 hours a week for a year. Good luck, unless of course you happen to be at a table with me

30h and 1 table -> 70hands per hour = 2100 hands per week

120 dollar / 21 =5,71 dollar you have to win per 100 hands

-> you have to win 114bb/100

So - its not possible to win 120 dollar per week - never, ever

I might be misunderstanding but I think op meant that he is saving $120 per week from non poker income to build a live roll, not that he intends to win $120 per week playing 5NL

You dont want to "learn how to beat the micros". You want to learn solid poker strategy and then the winning will come. You will need to make micro-specific adjustments to maximize your win rate vs weaker opponents and high rake, but you should still learn a more evergreen strategy that doesn't have to be overhauled when/if you try to move up stakes.

It's been mentioned but "From the Ground Up" is a solid series. In addition to Runitonce you find decent free content on Youtube - i like stuff by PositivePoker72.

You should also invest in tracking software - HEM,PT4,Drive Hud and Hand2note are the popular ones and they usualy have a free trial so check them out.

As you get in to the game more then tools such as GTO+, GTOWizard / GTOBase are often advised here on 2+2. You should also get yourself Flopzilla Pro.
