If I'm getting 3 to 1 on a river call does that mean that I have to be right 1 in 3 times for this call to be profitable or does it mean that I have to be right 25% of the time since 3 to 1 = 25%

That means you have to be good more then 25 percent of the time to call, if you are good only 25 percent of the time then you are even. The higher percentage the more the more money you should make.

What jack4you said.

General case, if the pot's offering you a to b, you need to be good b/(a+b) of the time for your call to be profitable.

EXAMPLES:
Offered 3 to 1 ----> you need to be good 1/(3+1) = 1/4 = 25% of the time

Offered 7 to 2 ----> you need to be good 2/(7+2) = 2/9 = 22% of the time

etc

if your getting y:x you have to be right x for every y wrong to breakeven.

or x/(x+y) in fraction.

yea you have to be right one out of four times to be even. but watch out as it isnt easy to guess about your real chances shooting off the hip. as you play and watch try to practice guessing how often those type of calls win.
